The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Speaking of Killer Bees in December, we've been invaded by the plague of flies, in January. I've never seen so many files as I saw this past weekend, except for maybe at a 4th of July picnic. And they all wanted to be either in the house or in the car with me. I guess this warm weather we've been having has really made them start hatching out. I'm hoping that this cold front that's coming through will kill them all and we'll have less of them come springtime.

It got here a few hours ago. We were 41 awhile ago and dropping. I've got to go blanket the horses. Do you leave them on all the time. Can water get under them?

I have to get my camera working. I have ducks in my front yard. I guess they are looking for a warmer place.

My first one was a DD. Heavy and dark but very sturdy. My next will be aluminum.

It was earlier but it isn't raining right now. We are so spoiled. My DIL is making coco and I'm sittimg here huddled in a blanket. My heater in my car is acting up too. It works go at 40-50 (mph) but when I stop or slow it changes to cold air. I don't know what that is about.

That's not good on icy roads!

Darn spell check (grin). I don't think we will get that low. If it looks like we might freeze on overpasses though I'll cancel class tonight. I don't want my students having to drive in it.

I'm worried about these blankets. I think they need them but I'm concerned about injury though. I've only dressed them up when they were stalled before.

I think the biggest cause for worry would be loose straps. Snug the belly straps so there is no space, no loose straps that they can get a foot caught in. Otherwise, if they catch it on something, it might tear, they may even rip the straps, but I've never had one get injured. Heck, Cyn caught the neck of hers on the gate hinge when she climbed out of her stall and it tore through and was left in a pile within three steps.

Horses can hurt themselves lots of ways, of course, but in my experience, they are stronger than their blanket.

They should be fine as long as you don't leave any of the straps hanging too loose. Grace did fine in her fly sheet and I left it on her 24/7 all summer long. She rolled in it and everything. She did hang it on something a time or two, but the blanket just ripped. She didn't get hung or anything. And Lord knows that Cyn hung hers bigtime when she bugged out the gate and she didn't get hurt either.

Are their blankets waterproof?

LOL, both of us thought of Cyn's fiasco. That was a pretty extreme case wasn't it.

I never blanket my horses unless I have been riding hard all day and it is cold and wet.

I just feed them lots extra.

A good friend of mine in Colorado, a ranch wife, says they never blanket either, just be sure they have plenty of good rich feed. They are in high country on the Front Range.

Fed them this a.m., sweet feed and oats, and I will be going down again shortly to feed again. I am breaking ice on the stock tanks, it is 29 and falling.

He sure does...that was gross.

Mack and I have been discussing...is he going soft:), Mack thinks tonight either Audrey or his daughter is going to get killed, and that will revitalize him. I was very disappointed to see Wayne Palmer as Pres. I don't like that guy, he's greasy:)

The sun is melting some of the ice but it is actually making things worse then better. Today's the first time we had trouble getting to town. Before the melting since is all we got was sleet there was a roughness to the ice that gave you plenty of traction. Now it's melting just enough to make it smooth. Getting up and down hills is a real challenge now:(.

I think tomorrow I will stay home:)

Today I went to WalMart, and walked for awhile, like exercise walk. I ran into 2J:) and a few other acquaintances. Everyone is getting cabin fever.

Tonight they are forecasting 8 degrees, and tomorrow night 0. So the ice will be here a while.

Maybe a mountain lion will get 'em. ;~)

Wayne does seem too much of a lightweight middle management suck up type to be president. He doesn't have the "gravitas" that Pres.Palmer 1 had.

It should have probably been cast with a new guy, with Wayne around as some kind of advisor, if they wanted to continue his character and the history with Jack. In fact... since they ignored what Jack was telling them, it might have made more sense for it to have been a president that did not know Jack.

Wayne's little pin-head advisor has to go... I know that.

I dunno.... we'll see how it plays out, a lot can happen in 24 hours :~)

LOL...well Mack also thinks they are going to blow up the White House...He's just full of doom and gloom:)

I read on the 24 thread last night that Rush Limbaugh is suppose to have said last week, that we are not going to believe how tonight ends...so there's that.

It really was, and it tore like paper. Granted, it was not a new blanket, it was aged, that may make a difference, but I think if you put the power of a horse against it, anything will tear.
