This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Hahaha, that’s too funny :-) Lovely dogs. My mother is watching a friend’s house and her dog, a happy go lucky doofy lab/shepherd mix. I got there today and he jumped in my car, climbed across my console and sat down in my passenger seat, all set to go for a ride. Did I mention that he had a small log in his mouth too? mmm... yeah. I was waiting for him to break my windshield. :-/
Yikes, a warmblood crossed with a TB is just too big to afford to be mean.
The show had a lot of entries. It is a 2 day show, with a pointed AQHA show tomorrow. Lots and lots of people there. Alison placed 5th in Showmanship and Horsemanship, 3rd in Pleasure and a first in trail. We were very happy with that, as the competition was very keen with her classes having 12-15 in. Amy won a 3rd in her Showmanship class, but I left before her Pleasure. It will be very late when they get home. They went up last night and might stay tonight again and leave for another show tomorrow.
Great shots of the dogs. Really makes me miss my female Lab.
It is lack of experience on his part, I realize and lots of wet saddle blankets will improve him, but that is what I wanted to avoid, was the having to train part. This was the first time I ever took a horse to a trainer and after two months there, I expected more. He still does not neck rein.
It will work out, as I am not one to give up.. :)
Actually, now I know TWO breeders -- one if you want the conformation type, one if you want a field trial/hunt test dog. The conformation type are more restful . . . but you'll never have a dull moment with a field dog.
I will say that breeding really tells. Miss Ruby is all on fire to retrieve and has been from the time she was about 6 months old. Before that she didn't really care that much (I have heard that Lean Mac dogs are 'late bloomers' - if "late" is 6 months!) I was kinda wondering when she would catch on -- but Mary Howley is an extremely knowledgeable field breeder and I figured she knew her business. And Ruby certainly bears that out, she has excellent vision, is very birdy, and would retrieve until she dropped in her tracks from exhaustion.
I can't help wondering how the pups from the other 2 litters she had turned out . . . .
He was a VERY big horse. Jatski (the sire) was 17.2 hands, and the mama was around 16.3. I figure he was about 16.2 but at 5 he probably didn’t have all his growth yet. Very massive and muscular, dark chestnut with 4 white socks and a blaze. Really handsome, good mover, shame he was so mean. He was just as mean under saddle as in the stall or paddock, he dumped me a couple of times. He would wait until he felt you relax or get off balance after a big jump, then he’d put his head down between his knees and just LAUNCH you!
First they tossed him a bumper, and he looked at them like, "Did you want me to DO something with that?"
Then they fired a shotgun off near him, and he hunkered down with his ears and tail down and trembled.
Then they tried to get him to go in the lake -- and he put one toe in and then pulled it out and wandered off.
They call him "The Anti-Lab". He's a cutie and very affectionate, so they're just keeping him for a house dog.
Great pictures everyone.
MT: Wow, that is a big horse, I’d like to see a horse like that preforming:). Your daughter and GD, are really showing in a big way:), sounds like they are doing well too. I’m impressed with Alison’s 1st in trail, that is great. What kind of things did she have to do? I always enjoyed the trail classes the most of all the classes.
AAM: I liked the picture and story of the dog that stole the bumper from yours:) I’m glad she got one anyway.
HOTD: LOL...the puppy looks so cute in those pictures. Sitting and just looking at the cat all bowed up, and then with his butt in the air looking under the truck... did the cat ever smack him? How much longer will he be with you?

We let the horses back out in the front pasture last night. I think it's funny that whenever we close that off and put them in the back forty, they feel like they're being cooped up. They really consider the front their "real" pasture, even when there's not much to eat in it, and the grass in the back is actually greener.
I think Pippin did get the puppy... he jumped back when he tried to go under the truck. Cartman has taken a couple shots at him too. Cats are very crabby pointy things!
We have him till the first.
This is an American Kite. The bird book says they should not be in this area, but the bird book is old, and I think they are slowly coming here. I had a pair several years ago that came 2 years running, and raised babies...I saw a flying lesson one day with one of the babies:), it was cool. It's been several years now since I've seen any, so it was nice to see this one.
We've also been catching some box turtles when we find them. Next week The Green Corn Festival starts, and on Sat. morning they will have turtle races. We will have a heat race here Fri. to find the best two of the ones we have (we have 3 right now), so that Blake and JP can both have an entry. This first one seems a likely candidate. He doesn't seem to mind coming out and moving around with people around, he is eating good, which is what he is doing here. He's eating everytime I look out there:). The other two we have are a bit slow to come out and move, and when they are out they are scratching and climbing the sides trying to figure out how to get out. The other one seems very content in the crate:) I guess he's figured out there is nothing wrong with having some one feed and water him:).
And this last because it's cute:). JP and Blake wanted to play in the sprinkler Fri. when they were here, but JP at first didn't like having it sprinkle on his head, so I put my hat on him and he was fine then:).

Darn....American Kite should be Mississippi Kite....
I’m on my second pot of coffee too....

Today it will only be 80, then we are going to hit the high temps again tomorrow. Kids are at another show today, but I think, I am not going to go. Yesterday was such a long day, because the classes were so big.
Great pics... that’s a pretty cute kid picture!
I look forward to seeing turtles that just run wild... we don’t have those :~) Can we find some when I come you think?
Are the turtles the same species? Their shell is very different.
Well, it isn’t raining here this morning....yet anyway...but they are forecasting 50% chance, so who knows. Since they are forecasting it it probably wont’ rain:). 40% and above are forecast all week.
Your horses do look like they are glad to be out there:). Mine are staring at the house because I have them shut in their runs, giving their pastures some time to grow. You can tell they thing they are being mistreated. I’ve been letting Harley in the front yard, and Rocky out back, but I’m getting ready to go to the store, so they can’t be let out till I get back...poor starving things.
Becky
Raining here. I have a lot to do but I just can’t seem to get moving this morning.
