The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Well I'm glad to hear that y'all made it ok. Every time I saw the radar there was this big blue band that just about covered the whole state of Oklahoma and most of Arkansas and it didn't look good. It was strange how it just seemed to stall out right at the Mississippi line. Saturday was gorgeous here. I was running around in shorts and a t-shirt fercryinoutloud! And yesterday was even warmer, set a record I think, but it wasn't as sunny. We're getting rain now and the temps are falling, but the rain is supposed to stop before the freezing temps get here, so I was glad to hear that. Hopefully your wind and snow won't amount to much and it'll start to thaw out pretty soon. Your pictures sure looked cool though. I love the way the trees look when they're encased in ice but I sure don't like what it does to them when there's too much of it. Y'all hang in there!

You two hang in there too!

Duchess, I feel for ya with the frozen faucets. You'll really have your work cut out for you when they thaw out.

Good Morning.

Rain, rain and more rain here. With what you other people are getting, I should not complain. It's the middle of January and pretty soon Spring will be here.

Has anyone heard of Double D trailers? They are steel and a lot cheaper then the aluminum ones. They make the trailers at their location also.

Check them out DOUBLE D TRAILERS

Good morning all.

Yes Dawg it is freezing now. I am 1 and 1/2 hours northwest of San Antonio. I am trying hard not to lose all my plants out in front. Anything portable is on the porch but even those I may have to move inside tonight.

A neighbor is coming to help me push my utility cart into the horse trailer to take it down to the shop here in town. It hasn't started for two weeks.

What a day to hitch up the trailer and shove machines around.

...So, it's mostly the 'idiot-factor'...

LOL! Yeah, I know whatcha mean there. Nobody around here knows how to act when it snows or ices here either. The wrecker guys have a field day though. Seems like every yayhoo in the county wants to get out and Whoop and Ride in their car and ends up stuck in a ditch, with nothing on but jeans and a t-shirt. Buncha Jack@$$ES!

I have one. It's a three-horse slant with a little tack compartment in front, and it is 7 feet high, it's called a thoroughbred trailer because it is so high. I like it.

We have high winds here, heavy overcast and 30 degrees. We are expecting freezing rain and even snow tonight but the weatherman has been so wrong so often nobody believes them anymore.

Yes, I am in the hill country. There are a lot of retired people around here. Also ranchers, like 5th generation. It makes for a great mix.

Thanks! He's a good-un, but back when that picture was made, he was WAY overweight for a Walking Horse. He had undiagnosed Metabolic Disorder and wouldn't even fit in a two-horse trailer. I finally got a handle on it and he's probably 300# lighter now and is much healthier. He's not skinny by any means but I need to get a new picture of him.

If I had it to do over again, I'd buy aluminum. They cost more but they sure do hold up better. My 3-horse slant is a rusty mess already because I don't have a shed for it. It's even rusted through in places. The next one I get will be aluminum.

But even from the side, I like the distance between his hip and the point of his buttock (below the tailhead) .. There was another horse of yours that I thought had a well rounded rump, but I don't remember..

Nice horses.

The Cheyenne model is the one I was interested in. There is a small living quarters in it. All I really need is a bathroom and an awning. A/C and microwaves and all the other bells and whistles are not necessary. The majority of horse camps do not have electric hook ups anyways.

Did you buy your trailer direct from them?

It's true the aluminum ones do not rust, but they do get pitted. Especially in the winters here. They are not maintenance free. We tried to clean the trailer the kids use and it looks the same. Of course the smooth side ones would be a lot better to maintain. The steel manufactures use better technology now and steel products do not rust like in days past. Look at how cars hold up better than they did 20 years ago.

Well I'll admit that I'm pretty much a stock horse person (which explains why I like the big butts) but every TWH I've ever known personally has been good-minded, sweet and honest. Such a nice breed.

Yeah, I was just reading about their galvanizing and painting process and it does sound better. Sounds like they've figured out how to get the weight down too. When I went and checked out the "Tack-Around" rear tack compartment they showed on them, I realized that a friend of mine has one of these. I'd never seen a tack compartment like that before but it's really cool. He likes his a lot but I don't know what model it is. He bought it used

I think it is much worse for you all - we're used to the bad winters and snow and ice, we just complain alot but our construction (roads, barns, houses, etc) are built with the winter and the wind taken into account. And most of the people here know how to manage and drive in it. It's much worse when it's one of the once in 100 year things you all get because you aren't accustomed to it and that makes it that much more dangerous.

Yep, that particular faucet is dead until spring when we can dig it up. Pipes are 3ft down so it will just have to wait. Fortunately we have others we can run hoses from.
