This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
I have no idea what the dragoon seat is but posting it the up and down motion you English riders do when the horse is at the trot.
Becky
It's for my novel that you all have helped me with.
I am reading Robert E. Lee Jr.'s book about his father and these terms came up when Lee was teaching young Rob how to ride.
Sounds like it must just mean they are sitting the trot...that would hammer you, or at least the horses back:)
Becky
Would it make you tired? That was young Rob’s complaint.
The posting or the sitting the trot?
I’d find sitting the trot very very tiring.
Once you learn to post, it really doesn’t require any effort to do, the work is actually being done by the horse.
Becky
Posting is rising and sitting in the saddle with the rhythm at the trot, as a way of comfortably riding a fast trot.
Thank you for all your help.
If you want to read a very good book, may I recommend Traveller by Richard Adams. (He is the same author who wrote Watership Down) It tells of the Civil War entirely from Traveller's point of view and it is a marvelous piece of work.
Carton... here's a video I found of someone posting the trot. posting trot
Yeah, been here all morning, and it’s so slow:)...even the horse forum is slow.
It’s raining, I’m at Jenny’s with the boys, and they are all sitting around rather lethargic watching cartoons:\
Becky
It’s gorgeous here, we’re washing pitch off the trucks... The horse trailer’s next.
We may get rain tomorrow. I’m actually hoping for it, now that the pasture’s mowed it would be nice to green it up again, before it dries up for the summer.
Thank you very much!
Hey, I finally got around to checking out that Myler Bit website. It’s pretty cool, but DANG how do you ever decide which mouth piece and which shanks you need?
I dunno... if the horse has a comfortable enough trot, the sitting trot should be no more tiring than the posting trot. If the horse has a short, choppy stride, mmm... different story. Sometimes I sit a trot if I want to relax and let the horse carry me. :-) Levi’s trot is FAR easier to sit to than to post to, but Tammy’s is easier to post to because my god, I always feel like my kidneys are going to come out through my ears because her stride is so choppy. Sweet Lord.
Get in the floor and romp with them:’)
I’m right the opposite. Up/down makes me tired. I seem to be able to find a better rythmn , sitting.
That’s why I like the site, it explained what all the mouth pieces and shanks worked on.
Becky
I wanted to add, I also had an advantage. One of the men who designed the bit was a speaker at the seminar I went to last year. He gave a lot of general info about these bits and bits in general, how they all work. That’s why I’ve always wanted one these. What he said made sense.
Becky
If the trot is slow enough it’s not bad to sit, but would be harder to post to. As I told carton, the horse should be doing the work, it’s really not the rider pushing himself up himself, it’s more letting the motion of the horse throw you up, then you come down controlled, is the best way I can explain. If the horse isn’t moving fast enough for the momentum to carry the rider up, then the rider has to push up himself, which is more work and more tiring.
I don’t ask for a really slow trot often. I need the horse to move at a nice 6-8 mph trot.
Becky
Yeah, sitting that happens. Posting, I’m working.
