The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Here is a shot of "Jody" our Arabian mare, that Amy took for the next catalog. They get to "Model" all the neat stuff.

Even Tubby gets in the action. :)

That’s awesome! I’ve wondered where some of those photos come from. Some of the people are folks whom I’ve competed with. Your mare is nice but Tubby looks just huggable!

Sounds like your daughter has a wonderful job.

No it does not have a nutcracker action. The mouth piece stay straight. It’s suppose to give tongue relief. It’s designed for an almost finished horse, level 2.

The company that makes these bits has a nice website that explains how each mouthpiece and shank they design works, and all the combinations of each you can buy.

$750 is a norm around here for full board with turnout and use of an indoor, perhaps there’s a wash stall at the barn too. That fancy pants clinic I rode at charges $800, but that’s a super nice barn, and the property is GORGEOUS, it’s like something out of Kentucky, and the place where I looked at that little dark bay gelding charged $1000 for practically nothing, it was an OK barn with a half finished indoor and really crappy turnout. Basic no frills full board cost anywhere from 400-600.

I paid 545 last month for pasture for two. That is a land payment. How someone could pay that much for 1..........

Wow! That’s incredible! I’d have a stroke if I had to pay that much, for one horse, much less for all 9 that I have. But the cost of living in general is so much higher everywhere else than it is here so I guess it’s to be expected. I haven’t boarded a horse in 20 years, and even then it was just $25 a month for stall rent. You had to feed and turn out and everything else for yourself. Most of the horses were just in their stalls long enough to eat and then went back out in the pasture. So I had no idea how much full board might cost. No wonder most people just have one horse or just lease one!

Hey, that’s a nice looking blanket on your Arab. Is it a fly sheet or a stable blanket or what? I’m always looking for a better fly sheet for Miss Grace.

Of course things are cheaper for rough board, but I really don’t know of any places around here that do that. You can find some places that will give you a reduced rate for use of your horse in lessons, but unless it was someone who I REALLY trusted to do that, I wouldn’t go for it.

Wow, I paid $550 and that was with training! Maybe it's a good thing to live in a depressed area. No wonder there are so many retired people living here. Lots cheaper.

Tubby is a very sweet pony and very well broke. Perfect kid's pony.

That looks like a nice one. I like it that it has a neck rug to go with it too. I think I almost ordered it last year but wasn’t sure exactly how dense the weave of the fabric was, so I went with what I had ordered before. To keep out the little culicoides gnats that Grace is allergic to, it has to be fairly opaque. Just a regular mesh fly sheet won’t do it. The one I have is an Amigo fly sheet and it’s made out of a mesh knit. You can still see through it if you hold it up to the light, but it seems to be a fine enough mesh to do the job. The next time you’re in the store where your daughter works, I’d appreciate it if you would take a look at one of these for me and see if you think the mesh is fine enough. It seems that I’m probably going to have to buy a new one every year because they get some pretty hard use with her wearing it 24/7 for 8 or 9 months of the year. I’ve had to sew this one up once already.

Yeah, I’m paying the guy who’s training Ellie for me $400 for a month, and that includes shoeing and everything. I thought it was kinda high, but I guess not.
