Holy crap! That is awful. It is close to 80 right now and feels a lot hotter. I am holding off on working outside until it cools later. Good thing, the nights are cool.
Today was run around day. I went to the doctor, then stopped at a couple of stores. Yesterday, Ben noticed that I had a dent on the lower right hind quarter panel of the truck. The "gator" strikes again! I never noticed it before. It just made me sick. I stopped at the body shop and it will be $359 to fix. Naturally, I have a $250 deductible...boo When I stopped to pay my insurance bill, the agent told me then had a price reduction and I was able to get 0 deductible for only $9 every 6 months. Of course, it would not apply to this incident. You really can't notice it too much, but the truck is leased, so I have to have it fixed. The body shop would not work on the trailer though.
Becky, I used Miracle Grow this year also. Last year I had some off brand stuff and they did not do well. With the cold and rainy weather, that did not help. I usually use organic fertilizer on my veggies. Your garden is just beatiful! My barn swallows have not hatched yet, I don't think.
WOW!!!!! I don’t know what to comment on first:)
There was a lot of riders, that’s a big group. Great training for a horse.
That barn is incredible, I love the runs out of the stalls. It looks so functional. How many horses does he have? and this is the guy who got dumped going down hill the other day right? I take it from the horse figure above the door he has gaited horses too:)?
Those mini’s are incredible, how do they keep the mane looking so nice?
How’d the foal break it’s leg? Probably helps that it did it while it was so young.
And finally, that team pulling the wagon:) That is so cool to see something like that at a station:)...I wonder how long it takes to get all that tack on. Looks like a job.
Great pictures Frog, thanks for posting them
Becky
The team looks like they are Haflingers. Very popular in these parts.
I think all this pawing and figidity stuff at the trailer is just temper too. I strongly believe horses go thru a teenage rebellious stage...I think Harley is there, and the fact that he feels so much better and doesn’t hurt anywhere just adds to the fact:)
The first time he started the bucking, I was in such shock that he would do that, he went on for longer then I should have let him, which is why I think he did it the second time. The second time he got maybe one, two bucks and I got him stopped and then ran him backwards. I really don’t know what else to do with him....I called my son when we got back and he said I did right, so I’m hoping I get this nipped in the bud.
Becky
We’re in the 80’s here too, and very very humid.
I’m so sorry about the dent. Those kind of things are just the pits.
Becky
I heard that. They are just a pain around horses. Bodie kicked Amy the other day thinking it was the dog. I had just brought him in from the pasture and Rebel was right on his heels. Bodie just hates that dog. He has a sore butt from rubbing and we were going to put some meds on him. Amy went up and touched his tail and he kicked her in the legs. I don't blame the horse, because he thought it was the dog and Amy broke rule number one by not talking to him and approaching him from the side. Luckily she was not hurt, but if she was a guy, she might have been hurting!
Ouch!..yep, I’d never own a heeler again. They are wonderful, smart, loyal dogs, but if you have horses, I don’t recommend them.
My horses all hated the ones we had.
Becky
Yes, this is the guy who’s horse fell on him. He does ride gaited but I’m not sure on the number of horses. I would guess 5 full-sized horses, about that many minis, a boer billy and 2 or 3 nannies, a mini donkey and a bunch of pet chickens. Quite a minagerie.
I have no idea how they keep that mini’s mane so nice, but from the look of her and the way she acts I’m sure she’s just a little pocket pony who loves to be brushed.
They said the little foal broke it’s leg somehow when it was getting up when it was 3 days old and it broke it so bad that it was just flopping everywhere so I was really amazed that she was doing as well as she was. She was ripping around that stall like nobody’s business. But they did say that she had a pressure sore under the cast right at the knee and they had to cut a window in the cast so they could doctor it. She just seems to take it in stride, but I seriously doubt that she’ll ever be able to be ridden. She’ll just be a pet I guess.
And I have no idea about what all it takes to get all that harness on. I’ve never done it or been around when somebody else was doing it. I don’t know how they keep it straight where everything goes! Wagon clubs are fairly big around here so it’s not uncommon to see one going down the road, but I think it’s a dying art. Most of the guys who do it are well into their 70’s or older. They were probably raised driving teams and just do it for fun now. Not many kids these days want to have anything to do with anything that slow! ;o)
I really think you did good on handling Harley’s bucking fit. I mean, it obviously worked because he settled down and was perfect the rest of the afternoon, so you can’t ask for any better than that.
Yeah, and that's really sad. Actually I don't even think "riding" is fast enough for the little darlings anymore, they all want the dirt bikes and 4 wheelers:\ Pretty soon, riding horses will be as rare as driving horses are now.
Well, I feel better that you and Charlie both said I handled Harley well enough. Yes he was perfect afterwards, but I didn't know for sure why that was either anymore then I know for sure what's going on with him in the first place.... Was he better because of how I handled it or just because he decided to be good??? who knows. The why's of why horses do the things they do eat on my brain:)
Becky
Oh geez...cold chills, especially since seeing that Ruffian movie.
Becky
Trying to figure out why horses do things is like trying to figure out why the TV works. Just accept that it does and move on, otherwise it’ll make you crazy! ;o)
I’m glad I didn’t see that movie!
Did you happen to catch the documentary on Barbaro that was shown on HBO?
Of course it was sad, but it was very interesting. I know you were really following that story, I searched it, and they are showing it quit a few more times. It only lasts an hour.
Becky
Thanks for the heads up anyways.
Well, we’re back from mowing the garden at the beach house today so visitors can park in it. It kicked our butts... we’ll likely hit the couch early.
I’ve briefly looked through the pictures and the bucking report... I’ll read more and catch up in the morning... Becky asked all the good questions anyhow!
I’m sorry you don’t have HBO. It was an interesting program. They mentioned Ruffian in it too. They showed the sling that they put Barbaro in then in a swimming pool so that what happended to Ruffian did not happen to him. It was an amazing contraption. It lifted the horse back out when he was fully awake and carried him to his stall to be lowered to his feet.
The show was very tastefully done, and gave a lot of insight into the owners, trainer, and vet. I’ll keep it protected and maybe I’ll still have it when you come in Oct.
Becky
When I was watching the Ruffian program, a lot came to my mind, about how things would have been different with the advance changes in vet care. These events are so tragic, but a lot of knowledge is gained from them.
Tammy came over and rode Bodie last night. I was busy cooking ribs and sweet corn and didn't get any pictures. I did put a few things in the trailer. One of these days I will be ready to go.
Good morning:)
Yeah, I guess a lot is learned, I’m still very torn about when an injury is that severe if they should even try tho. I was shocked given the time in which it happened that they even tried to fix Ruffian. I wasn’t expecting that part.
This show about Barbaro, did put a good light on every ones motives to try to save the horse, which I hope is true. It seemed it, because there were interviews with everyone involved, and they all seemed very sincere.
But having said all that...some film clips where shown of him walking towards the end without the cast on his leg....it did not look good. Even tho it was supporting him and he was walking, it was very very crooked. It made me wonder how it would hold up if he ever got to be turned loose and took off hard, let alone if they had ever tried to breed him, which they may not have.
I also found it interesting, about when they moved him from the track to the hospital 80 miles away, they practically shut down an express way, they had an 8 motorcycle police escort, and even tho it was just an hour and half from the time it happened, people were along the way holding signs with good wishes...how did they know the trailer was going to be going by so fast??
Any way it was very interesting. I’m not sure that it changed my opinion that the best thing was done for him, but I don’t blame anyone for trying, it’s just not what I would have done I don’t think. By the time they did put him down, the vet said he was a not a happy horse, and was having miserable days....I just don’t know if it was worth it, even given any knowledge they gained. Hard to say.
