It was on the Horse Forum that I read about not using Nitrofurazone below the knee. I think it was that Ryle person, seemed credible, but I did a google search and found lots of sites saying Nf would prevent proud flesh, so who knows. Not me.
I do like the aerosol spray powder Nitrofurazone better than the goop. It dries weepy cuts and dries to a powder instead of attracting dirt like the goop.
Only trick is getting the spray ON Bay, who thinks the aerosol can is going to kill him.

I’ve heard of that Granulex.
I figured an “equine” vet would probably want to stitch it, but I’m not even going to try. With all the wet and mud, and rocks, I think it will be fine with good doctoring.
I’d like to shave the hair, but I don’t have clippers, and I’d be afraid to try with a razor.

Good Morning and a late start. My cable had to be “refreshed”. The cable company keeps trying to sell me digital phone service. I told them heck no, I wouldn’t be able to call you, when the service goes out all the time. At least I did not have to wait 3 days for a repairman.
To: MissTargets
We came to the same conclusion about the cable phone service. Our TV and internet is already the same source, we didn’t want all our communication eggs in one basket.

Ouch, poor Rock. Looks like he was hung up on something. The cut looks pretty deep and I would keep it wrapped for a few days with a antibiotic product. Probably wouldn’t hurt to hose it with cool water, before you re wrap.
To: HairOfTheDog
I’ve never seen the spray-on kind of Nitrofurazone. That does sound better than the ointment. I’ll have to look for it the next time I’m perusing my catalogs.
I do know that I had been using Nf in the gelding’s sheaths to soften the crud that they get up in there, prior to washing it out with Excalibur, but somebody on the Horse.com forum, and it may have been that same person, told me that you shouldn’t use it on penile tissue because there had been studies showing that it could cause cancer there or something like that, so I quit doing that. There’s been some good information on that forum from time to time.

I always have a strong tendency to lean forward when I ride at the trot and canter.Every Hunt seat rider, I have seen, always lean somewhat at those gaits. You look very nice and that big ole horse is such a sweetheart. You don't look funny on him. Thanks for posting the videos.

Then do the best you can with a pair of scissors, especially on the hair that's hanging down into the wound from above. The stuff down below the cut shouldn't be as much of a problem. You can get pretty close with scissors. Just start snipping UP, against the grain of the hair, and work your way across the width of the cut. Then rinse all the cut hair out of the wound tract and re-bandage. It'll probably be ok to wait until the next time you remove the bandage to reapply the medicine though.

I used to get Green Soap at the drug store for cleaning out the sheath. Which brings me to a question. Bodie rubs his tail quite a bit and I did notice that his sheath is pretty dirty. Do you think he might be rubbing because he is itchy down there? He has been wormed, so I don’t suspect that is the problem. Gosh, I hate to do that job.
To: HairOfTheDog
we didnt want all our communication eggs in one basket. Me either. They are going to offer cell phone service, but that won't be until the end of the year. I really should have one when I go riding. Yesterday, I gathered up all my old tack and will start some cleaning. The only thing I have put in the trailer is the new saddle. It rained on and off yesterday and it is very cool today. There is still quite a few things that I will need to buy. Thank goodness, the daughter works at a tack shop.

Julia was suppose to be here at 10, she called and said shed be about 30 minutes late...probably waiting on her trank to kick in:)
*shaking head* Why does she Do this to herself? She shouldn't be riding if she has to take tranks every time she gets on... it's obviously not fun for her!

Hey, thanks for the videos Beaker! You look like you're really comfortable up there.
{sit up!}. And your trainer really sounds like she knows what she's talking about. I like to use the "hanging by a string coming out the top of your head" visual image too.
{Sit up!} I've got a book that has all that kind of stuff in it. I can't remember the name of it but I found it to be extremely helpful in maintaining a good seat.
{SitUP!} LOL, I just had to raz you a little bit. ;o)

Well, it wouldn’t hurt anything to give him a good cleaning so give it a try and see if that’s it. If that doesn’t do the trick then he may just have dry itchy skin on his tail. Hope was rubbing quite a bit and I put some of the Calm Coat on hers, right at the roots and it seems to have helped some.

A very good friend of mine who has forgotten more about horses than I will ever know swears by sauerbraten for these types of wounds as a packing agent. I have never tried it myself but have not had the opportunity to either. For proud flesh, I have been using a product called Scar-Sof-E. It is expensive, but is amazing! It retards proud flesh growth and softens up existing growth, even old growth, that sloughs off easily. It even smells wonderful and makes your hands feel very soft and comfy.
That is a nasty looking wound and probably should have a few stitches in it, but it is probably too late now. Aren't diapers useful? You might have to add some Elastikon over the bandage, especially at the top, if it doesn't hold together long enough.
