The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

No - It won’t hurt anything to switch it back and forth. It must may number them funny :~)

Good Morning! I’m glad to hear that you’ve pretty much got everything squared away for your trip. And like you said, bathing Harley this morning is probably best anyways. That way he’ll won’t have a chance to roll before you leave.

The only thing Preen does is keep seeds from germinating, so I don’t think it would hurt established ornamental grass. It didn’t even bother my tulip bulbs. I was afraid that it would keep them from coming up, but it didn’t. As long as you’re planting established plants and not starting seeds in your garden, you should be fine.

I’ve swapped memory cards between cameras before and it makes a different folder for each one, and like Hair said, the numbering schemes are different, but that’s about all.

LOL...the saddle is ALWAYS in my trailer, no fear of forgetting it.

The horse will be tied to the trailer, because he will be drying from his bath, so no fear of that.

One other time, I did forget my ice chest with my food...so there still is that to worry about, and my phone is on the charger, I have to remember that....

I think I’ve got every thing else covered:)

I always make a check list when I’m going on a trip and mark things off as I load them up. Otherwise I’d forget half my stuff. Forgetting the food would definately be bad!
Have you got fly spray loaded up already. That’s a biggie when the horse has to stand around tied a lot.

Yep, fly spray loaded. Feed, water, first aid supplies, coggins papers, grooming supplies, bridle, halters, lunge line, lunge whip, LOL...Susie is already in the truck, she’s not going to get left:), jack, tire iron, spares, clothes, bedding, rain gear, a blanket for Harley, chairs, lantern, propane bottles...I think I’m covered with everything but the ice chest....I’ll load it and put it in after bath time.

I use to have a really nice list that I had laminated...but over the years that I didn’t compete it got lost, and now I’m winging it:). I may have to make another.

Oh, I did manage to get in a small exercise ride on Grace yesterday afternoon and boy was it interesting. I had never really ridden her out from the pasture before, so she was seeing boogers under every blade of grass. She was even afraid of her own shadow! She boogered at the pig pen, and at the corn stalks in the field, and at all the mailboxes. Then the neighbor was mowing her grass on a riding mower, AND their dogs came out. It was so funny, there were so many things to booger at that she didn’t know which way to booger next. The mowing neighbor turned off her mower and we stopped and talked for a while and Grace got to inspect the dogs and kinda calmed down a bit, but then we went around the bend of the road and I could hear a tractor coming and I thought “OH SH!T” and started looking for a place to get off the road. Luckily there was a corn field there with no fence so we crossed the ditch and got up there and I sure was glad I did because it was a spray rig with the big boom arms all folded up that came around the bend and Grace had a small nervous breakdown. But I kept her head pointed towards it so all it amounted to was a little bit of running backwards and sideways. She calmed down after it passed and we went on our way again, but I didn’t want to push her too much on her first outing so I turned her around not to long after that and we headed back. I’m sure she’ll be better the next time. She needs to be ridden out like that every day and I intend to try to do it at least a couple of times a week, just as a confidence builder.

Good Morning.

I was tired from all the yard work and heat and slept in this morning. I glad I made my good wishes last night to Becky, in case she doesn't get on again before she leaves. If you do get on again Becky, be safe and

I think she’s out with the farrier right now. Then she’s gotta bathe Harley and finish loading up the trailer. It’ll probably be close to noon before she leaves.

I was getting these pictures ready for posting when the farrier got here. He's done, I'll finish this, then sign off.

This is where Susie has been since 7:30 this morning.

And I guess Grizzly is wanting to hitch a ride too:)

OK, every one have a great holiday weekend, see you all Sun. evening.

Becky

Yeah, it was a good day... dropped the truck off to be looked at in the morning, it’s been making a grinding sound sometimes when we start it, and it turns out there are a couple bad teeth in the flywheel. That’s an expensive fix, but one that can be put off a little while.

We just visited and chatted all day, it was a really pretty day.

Today we’re going to go down and help Bob with saddle fitting on Kat, and then I’ll work her and probably ride her and check her out. Bob needs to see her go under saddle before he’ll trust her.

Make sure Ecurbh is armed with the camera. We don’t wanna miss any excitement if Kat decides to pull any A-rab airs-above-ground! ;o)

Heh... she's a quarter horse. :~) No Arab outbursts from her!

I'm almost sure she won't act up a bit. Even if she is too hot from whatever Bob's been feeding her, that horse is as broke as they come. She was before Tiff had her, and she stayed steady through everything Tiff did.

ecurbh's first trail ride, when he'd only been on a horse a few times, was on Kat.

She has a few issues to be worked around... she has a tendency to get herself caught up in ties and she'll pull till something breaks if she gets hung up. Even getting her head under the lead rope will set her off. She needs to be tied high and short, always, no exceptions. I want to make sure Bob's clear on that.

And she's real paranoid about strong male horses around her rear end. She hates Bay, if I got any closer to ecurbh in the picture above, she'd turn ass and nail him. Bay knows it, that's why he's turned away, and I'm trying to get him to sidle over close enough for a picture. That's as close as I could get.

So she needs to be given space, isn't fond of close quarters with strange horses. I hear she's bonding just fine with Bob's two geldings, so she'll likely be fine with Bob getting close if needed.

Oooooh, I got her mixed up with the white horse that Becky rode then. Sorry 'bout that. Sounds like she'll be fine then if he just quits feeding her all that high-powered stuff.
