The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

You’re not gonna believe this, but we’re getting smoke from those south Georgia fires. It’s incredible how hazy it is outside, and it actually smells like a fire. Visibility is maybe a couple of miles. I’ve never seen it like this before. It wasn’t like this yesterday, but it appears to have blanketed the whole NW part of Alabama overnight. Are y’all getting it over in the Atlanta area too?

I get a day off. I left my school in a mess last night and the house needs cleaning and what do I do?
I didn’t feel like riding. Too much of a hassle but I played with them. There is the cutest baby out there...anyway I saw this orange ball and started playing soccer with SL. She gets ancy around balls but she ran with me and I bounced it off of her and rolled it up in the air and we were having fun or so I though. She even kicked it once. Anyway, I unclipped the rope to see if she would chase it. She took off at a run ...and went right past it to her pasture gate. I don’t think soccer is her thing lol.

When the crops are burned in Mexico, it gets smoky here like that. Sometimes even ash falls.

Oh, yeah, we had it last week and had it again this week. A NW wind cleared it out for awhile, but the wind shifted back SSE and we got it for a second time over the weekend.

Monday was particularly bad. I stepped out of the house and thought that the no-count people up the hill behind us were burning their trash in the yard again, the smoke was so thick. You couldn't see the downtown skyline, and the radio folks were advising people not to exercise outdoors until it cleared.

I think the wind has backed some more over to ESE now and the worst of the smoke is passing to the SW of us (and coming over to you.)

Most of the fires have been controlled, but the big Sweat Farm Road fire near Waycross is only 35% contained. They expect to make more progress today as resources from the other, smaller fires are brought to bear.

Is that right - no walking?

Hi - Like the two other ladies said, the walking is more to keep them from going down and rolling. Laying still, is ok to do.

I know whatcha mean about not wanting to clean the house. I can almost always find something better to do than that.

That’s funny about SL and the ball. I got one of those great big exercise balls not too long ago and took it down to the barn to see what everybody would do. I figured Bob would tear it to pieces because he does everything else, but the little cuss is scared to death of it. The youngest, Miss Ellie is the one who ended up being the curious one. Of course then the others followed, just to see what she’s doing. They’re ok with it if it stays still, but when it moves everybody turns tail and runs. Buncha chickens!

Yes, I would bring Bodie. He should be good to go by then. He is not bad, just doesn't know a whole lot. Not spooky, goes through all the mud and water. Tammy has two little kids and her horse is not at her house. This gives her an opportunity to ride, when her and her husband come over.

Sure is a warm one today. I have been laying down mulch and needed a break. A salesman was just here to give me an estimate on a new furnace and A/C. The A/C when out last year and the furnace is over 23 year old (might be more than that) so it is time to buy a new one.

Crazy gasoline prices. Yesterday it was $3.49/gal today it's $3.19. Diesel was $2.78 yesterday and that made me happy to see it less than gas, but today it went up to $2.84. Doesn't stop people from driving around here. I don't think anyone works anymore.

Wow, $3.49 is awful! It’s $3.05/$3.15/$3.25 around here for name brand gas. A little less for cut rate gas. And you’re right about it not stopping people from driving much. I think it’d have to get up around $5 a gallon before it did that. And it looks like it’s well on it’s way to getting that high.

Around here gas is about 3.13 for regular/brand and anywhere from 3.05-2.98 or 2.99 for no-name gas. The Hess is usually where I can get it the cheapest, but not always.

Just sat down at the 'puter here at work. Been outside all day running around on rooftops.

Diluting it means that you’ll have to buy more. It’s bad enough that they’ve used ethanol as an additive when they did away with the other stuff (forget what it was) which decreases gas milage.
