The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Yeah - my only other colic ever was Bay, and he relapsed in the evening when the first banamine wore off. He hadn’t been oiled the first time though.

I always get the vet to give them the oil. That stuff works wonders, even if it is a big messy coming out the other end.

Yeah, with Bay I think he thought the symptoms were pretty minor, he had gut sounds, maybe thought I was imagining things. When he had to come back that night when Bay got worse again, he said “well, you were right!”

How long should I leave her in the paddock? The vet said “A few hours”, and then turning her out would be good to encourage her to move around as much as possible. She’s just standing in the barn now. Should I let the others out to pasture, and maybe hand walk her around a bit out there, let her eat, walk, eat walk, a little? Or let her go?

What about this? Video below shows a spasm she's having now, watch her belly closely, a few times a minute she gets a cramp and that crease in her adominal muscle gets very tense... then it seems to pass.

Pony cramping

She's still been in the paddock all day... she's layed down and rested some, she's browsed some on hay, but I haven't let her out on pasture.

How’s she doing now? I just saw your posts, been in town all day.

If she is still cramping, I’d be thinking she may need another dose of banimine. As long as she is drinking and not rolling I’d leave her alone, and keep her where you can see her.

I called the vet... looked at the wrong number scribbled on my paper and ended up calling my real vet, not the one who came... but I asked him anyway, I described the symptoms to him and he didn’t seem real alarmed, thought it was OK to let her keep munching hay, maybe wet it down.

Just for fun, because of the comment that Frog made about Harley being more dappled this year, I went back and looked at pictures of him this time last year, and he is pretty different.

His hip looks so much darker and his legs whiter this year.

Agreed, he looks a lot darker! He’s never the same twice, eh?

Yeah, he changes all the time, and that seems odd to me. His feed hasn’t changed. I’m wondering if the weather has something to do with it. Last year I remember it was already very very hot, the sun had been out a lot. Maybe he had already bleached out. Rocky gets really black on his shoulders in early spring, and it fades out to gold color...

Our weather this year has been crazy, it’s still getting pretty cool at night, and we really haven’t had totally “sunny” days.

Anyway, hows Pony? Still cramping?

Could be as simple as that, not as much sun.

Pony’s OK I think. I didn’t see her doing that cramping last time I was out. She seems cheerful.

But that doesn’t explain his legs ;~)

Well, glad to hear it, you going to sleep OK tonight:)?

LOL...after I posted those pictures, I’m wondering how much of that black on his hip is dirt:)...he hasn’t had a bath this year, and in the picture from last year he had had a good bath that day, it was taken at the same ride I’m going to this weekend.

I think I’ll sleep, I think she’s OK.

We soaked their hay tonight. They’re out there trying to figure out if that’s a good thing or not.

Are you sure Harley's not part appaloosa, here with this color changing all the time :)

I think it's because he's healthier this year. Not that he wasn't healthy before but he's really toned and solid now and I think that affects their coat.

I’m glad to hear Pony seems to be okay. I think there is Banamine paste available - you might check sometime with your vet about just having some on hand. It doesn’t work as fast as the shots but it does work.

I do have some on hand. I asked him about it on the phone, he said not to give it then, because oral doesn’t work fast enough, but it would prevent him from being able to give her the shot.
