This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
the front hasn't come through here, yet. It's raining but not cold, about 64 degrees.
I hope Guido comes back, too. He is entertaining!
It does, the pellets pretty much dissolve into a yucky green muck (but they like it) It's good even the COB absorbs a lot of water and gets soft like oatmeal.
I saw that... well... it's early :~)
I don't think so, coz they got nothing left to shoot from, but I don't really know for sure. Just a theory.
LOL, I didn't think of that. He didn't get a vasectomy, of course. What a doof I am.
I feed my mini's, donkey and goats hot soaked beet pulp but that's their usual meal. Everything else makes the donkey founder. They love the juice, they always drink it up first before they eat.
Somebody else on here said they hated feeding beet pulp and I agree, I do, too. I've tried everything else on the market and it all makes the donkey founder. I can give them straight hay but doggone it, they want something in a bucket. So I'm stuck soaking beet pulp.
Beet pulp just makes me shudder .. lol .. I was endoctrinated when I showed Palominos that anything with beet pulp in it would make their color "muddy" .. then when I was showing Australian Shepherds I was told that It would make the blues have "running red" through their coat..
Such stupid things we worry about when 'cosmetics' are important, huh?
I've never fed beet pulp or seen it. Supposedly Bay ate beet pulp when he was doing endurance. Bob said he had gone over there and made some comments to her about how lean he was, to which she got defensive and said "no, he's just not fat any more like he was when you had him". Anyway, they got around to talking about beet pulp and Bob decided she was nuts :~) I told him it was not all that uncommon.
I've heard alot about people feeding it, of course... is it red, like beets?
I feel for ya with the 18* temps and having to haul water from the house. Where I used to live, I had to do it often enough that I finally got myself a kids wagon to haul the buckets in and that really helped. I could haul 4 full 5 gallon buckets at a time with it and it sure was a whole lot easier on the shoulders.
Huh, it might be true, I don't know. I've been feeding them beet pulp for a couple of years but I haven't noticed any change in their color. I really don't pay that much attention to them, though. And none of them are palomino, 3 of the mini's are various shades of dun and one is white.
Happy Friday!
No, it isn't red, it's gray, very dry, shredded crap. You can also buy it in pellets, I think. I buy the beet pulp shreds with molasses added to it. Makes it a little more palatable.
That was me that said I hate soaking beet pulp, but I finally found something to take it's place that won't founder them and it's been a Godsend. No more soaking! It's called Triple Crown Safe Starch and is actually a fortified forage, so it's like eating a really yummy hay with vitamins in it. Tennessee loves it.
Huh - sounds yucky :~\
So it's lower on the fuel spectrum than say, grain or cob?
It looks like it's already been through the horse.
Thank the Lord! I'm calling my feed store....
Do you feed it in the same kind of quantities you feed grain? or more, like forage?
"So it's lower on the fuel spectrum than say, grain or cob?"
It's supposedly not a whole lot different from grass hay. So far, I've found that to be true. I can give them a ton of beet pulp with no problems.
