This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
The bridle looks kind of busy to Western or racing eyes, but really it works. All the stuff on the reins and breastplate is a German martingale, which is a lot more flexible in use than a standing tiedown or even a running martingale (it basically works like draw reins, but without the extra rein in your hands). The noseband is a little unusual - it's called a flash noseband, or a figure eight (though that's built a little differently). The lower loop keeps her from opening her mouth wide enough to stick her tongue out of the corner of her mouth - a bad habit of hers - but she can still eat treats! Nothing more distracting than a horse cantering along with 6-8 inches of tongue flapping in the breeze!
I caught a report this morning on the news about the abused horses. The ladies excuse: Damage to the barn from the ice this winter made it difficult to tend to the horses properly, but she was working on it. There was feed in the barn.
Sounds a bit lame to me. She is being charged with 13 counts of animal neglect.

If what I was told was true that several of the horses had not been out of the barn for 3 years.

I’ve been working in my garden and mowing all day, between rain falls. I took some pictures but for some reason they won’t load. Been trying for about 3 hours.

Are the little guys in the bottom of the first picture new petunias?
We were busy today... built a box to store the generator in for the summer where it's secure and a little hidden.
And we had a guest dog... a golden who has been here before. We kept him for about 3 hours till the owners got home from work and came looking for him. Turns out they only live across the street, and they have horses, and it's possible we can work out an occasional farm sitting deal with them :~)
No those are impatiens I put in today. The petunias are the dark purple at the top of the picture. I put those in back in April, they survived the freeze.
I also put in a few coleus, some dianthus, and periwinkles. I’m pretty much done planting, now just watch it grow.
I hope the guest dog, doesn’t have to cross a busy street to come visit. Sounds like he may be making this habit. But it is nice to have house sitters nearby.

Your garden looks very pretty, Becky. Still a little too early to plant here, although the weather has been gorgeous. Those flowers I bought last weekend, need to be hardened off a bit, before they are planted. There are on my back patio, where they get partial direct sun.
Everything has dried up here and I wish we would have waited on renting the BobCat. All the manure could have been spread and the dirt pile leveled without getting stuck. Oh well, you just never know.
Today, I am going to the grade school to have "Tea" with Alison. The school already had a "Muffins with Mom" and "Donuts with Dad" events. Should be fun.
Does your garden spot get a lot of sun?
I'm limited to impatiens and hostas and stuff like that, with azaleas and rhododendrons as the permanent framework, because we live in a hole by a creek with BIG shade trees!
My house is “L” shaped, and the garden sits inside the “L” with a picket fence around the edges. The outside edges get a lot of sun, the inside, by the house stays shaded, so I get to have a big variety. I’ve noticed tho, that the redbud tree sitting behind the bench is changing the dynamics of what gets sun tho, the bigger it gets. Also once the morning glories cover the fence, things get different. I have to keep all this in mind when planting.

He does... he has to cross the big road out front. So it isn't good... He sounds like he has the same triggers Homer does... Loud noises, gunfire, storms... and if they aren't home he digs out and runs away. I said we know just what that's like. Well, I told her if we see him, we'll bring him in and keep him safe.
Ah - then we have impatiens about the same age :~) We can post pics in a month and compare. I think my yard is good for impatiens, but I haven't had them here before. Do they do well in the heat you have in the summer?
I went out and bought a bunch of flowers and the dogs and I will put them in this afternoon.
Might as well put the puppy's digging propensities to good use.
Just make sure they have plenty of water. They also seem to be REALLY hungry for fertilizer.
Impatiens are one of the few bloomers I can grow in my very shady yard!
“Miracle Grow” works wonders, and if you use that you’ll have beautiful impatiens. Those flowers are a personal favorite of my mothers. We had them all over the place, and we have very hot and very humid summers. They do best if you water them in the evening.
It's o.k. to water them in the evening if you have good air circulation . . . they can get mold and stuff if they stay too damp. I usually water early early in the morning, before I take the kids to school.
Of course, since the dogs have a wading pool, I just fill my watering can there!
I have to get a picture of Ruby in the pool - it's a riot! Shelley wades around, splashes a little, drinks a bit, and enjoys herself quietly. Ruby bounds into the middle of the pool (splashing half the water out) then digs frantically in the water, dives under, wallows, bites the hose, tries to knock Shelley down, and generally makes pandemonium.
Check out all the volunteer grass that has come up out of the bedding we've spread under the trees. We didn't seed it. That hay we've been feeding just has that much seed in it. We've never had real grass there before.
(time to get out the mower . . . )
Impatiens do very well, as long as I water every day, and have them in places where they get the least amonut of direct sun.
Miracle grow is the key to any annual, IMO. I water with it about once a week.

I had JP all day today, and this evening I think Mack and I are going to the blues festival that is going on this weekend. I’m in town now, but we are waiting to see what the weather is going to do, it’s thundering and getting dark again. I sure hope I get to ride tomorrow.
