This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
LOL, did you think I was lying:), just kidding.
I know when Charlie first gave it too me, I was like, Oh my...but he said it was an easy bit, and that's what the guy at the saddle shop said too. Harley really works well in it.
Becky
I can’t believe it, I think I found the video that I saw where he discusses different bits.
http://www.mikmar.com/videos.html
It’s the bottom one, titled “Frank Evans Discusses Bits.”
That’s kind of what the guy at the shop said today, about the twisted snaffle I was looking at today. He indicated it was something you only use temporarily till you sore up the corners of their mouths, then you switch to something else. I didn’t like the sounds of that.
Becky
Thanks for the links. I’ll have to look at them when I’m in town on our other computer.
Becky
As I recall, on the video he said that he didn’t really like single jointed snaffles, too much nutcracker action. He likes the double jointed ones. I haven’t been able to get the video where he discusses the different types of bits to work. The other ones are working, though. Might be on youtube, I’ll look later. Gotta run a kid to gymnastics.
Me too! Funny story behind my pick. My brother was 3 years old when I was born. He couldn't pronounce my name (Carolyn) and all through our growing up years, he always called me Curlin!...lol
Good luck with the thread tomorrow Hair, if you decide to do it. It is suppose to be a nice day and I am heading out early to the greenhouse. I sure want to watch the Derby and especially to see if they will announce where they are going to bury Barbaro's ashes. Tonight there is a special on about him. It was suppose to be earlier this week, but a hockey game when into overtime, so they postphoned the show.
Optional curb strap attached below the reins on a snaffle bit is acceptable.
We arrived promptly for the alpaca pickup and found a pack of them in the pasture.
Jessie persuades the alpacas to come in with a promise of partaking of provender. :~)
The surplus alpacas were purged from the paddock leaving the particular alpaca perplexed. :~)
The alpaca was persuaded to put on a proper alpaca halter
And politely paraded into the trailer brought to pick up the alpaca.
Alpaca arrived at the fair and was presented with a pretty alpaca party hat.
Thus completes the alpaca pickup post... :~)
I don't think she'll take him if she doesn't think he can place and she's a pretty good judge of that I believe. She has taken several of a friend's horses to the Nationals and the World and won on them.
I'd like to meet your friend :)
I love those pictures. Alpacas and llamas are the silliest looking cute animals God created. With the most beautiful eyes.
They’re the most docile, timid, gentle things too.
They’re great. We want one. But I’m told you have to have at least two ;~)
Oh, I don’t know. We only have the one llama and he is not timid :) He is the goat’s protector and will take on a dog or coyote in a heart beat.
They’re not as bold as llamas, I don’t think. And they aren’t as big ;~)
That might be the difference. Thumper is okay being handled by people but he’s pretty in your face with strangers if they come around his goat. He’s only spit a couple of times, once at my dog and once at a person, but I’m told they can get really ugly.
A goat is something I’d like to have too... someday :~)
Good night... I’m hittin the couch. we’re tuckered out. :~)
Night :)
Pretty good presentation of promoting Alpacas, Hair!... lol The first line, had me thinking of Peter Piper.
Have a great weekend everyone!
