The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Fair enough... it’s grey and drippy outside... I could use a nap myself.

You didn’t kill the thread, I was getting my nails done.

I do like Walkin’ Fool but Epona rubs me the wrong way.

Gotta leave again, nearly time to pick up the rugrats.

Walkin Fool is in Texas but I’m not sure where. Maybe down near Houston.

I'll give y'all something to look at anyways by sharing a few pics I took this past Sunday at the old RR Bridge down on the river. It's really really old and no longer used by the railroad so they took out the lift span that let the barges go under it and renovated it and made it a walking trail. All it does is go out to an island between the main channel of the river and the barge channel and dead end, but it's still a nice place to walk and catch the river breeze and gives you a great view. There's been some discussion about developing the island with more walking trails and such and adding stairs at the far end of the bridge so people could get down to it, but that's probably a long ways off. But here's what I got...

Here's the view from the top of the trail going down to the bridge. You can see the old tracks on top and the walking bridge underneath...

Here's my hubby posing for scale...

Here's me, looking down-river at one of the main bridges that run between the 4 towns in this area...

This is looking up-river. The bridge in the foreground has just been opened in the last year or so. You can see Wilson Dam in the background. It was built by the TVA in the 30s and 40s...

And these next few are just to show you how good the zoom works on my dinky little camera...
In this one, there's a liiiiittle bitty white dot that you can see between the 3rd and 4th bridge footings, right where the water meets the cliffs. That's a fishing boat...

Here's the same boat at maximum zoom. I could almost see what they were eating for lunch, but the camera was having a hard time focusing because of my hands shaking, even though I was resting it on the railing. I really need a tripod for stuff like that...

Similar deal. We were at the far end and there were people coming towards us...

People fishing on the far bank of the barge channel. You can just barely see 'em, right in the middle of the picture...

It was kinda fun snooping on people like that and just having fun with the camera. So that's it for my non-horse-related post.

Wow... that’s one LONG footbridge, and one heck of a zoom! I want one of those! I know what you mean about it being hard to steady on that much zoom. every little movement is magnified too. I had a really powerful zoom for my 35mm camera... same issue there. Really hard to get them to come out sharp.

She’s unusual, for sure... Life’s a carnival of different sights and types. I think they’re an interesting couple, and one I would not have predicted.

Can you imagine driving a car across that bottom part, coz that’s what it was used for back in the day. Of course they drove Modle T’s back then and there probably weren’t enough of them to have to worry about having to meet somebody on it, but it just kinda freaks me out. The new bridge is 2 separate sections, each 3 lanes wide with breakdown lanes on each side, making 5 lanes total, so the difference between then and now is pretty amazing.

They probably had rules, to yield to whoever was already on the bridge... if you can even see them at the end!

I haven’t really seen too many pics of WF, but from the ones I saw, he seemed fairly good-looking and possibly Latino. I got the impression that he had either long hair or dreds, but maybe I’m wrong about that. He trains Walking Horses doesn’t he?

Yes on all counts!... he’s got short hair now, but has had long dredlocks in older pics he’s posted.

Cool! I gather his name is Joey then. I knew that he did some shoeing but I didn’t know that he was a NB farrier. That’s nice to know.

Well, I’m outta here early today. I got some errands to run so I’ll talk to y’all later...

I’m about to go insane with this dreadful dreary weather!! I wish it would rain or get off the pot so to speak. I want to fish!

Hey...where can I get a little utility trailer? A little one, fiberglass, to pull behind a car, say...to put things like an ice chest, big tent...that kinda thing.

Any idear when I can get something like that locally?

I know what you mean. About the time the sun peeks thru, and I think we’re finally clearing up, I see clouds forming again in the south and west. Hopefully they have it right, that tomorrow is going to be nice:)

I don’t have a clue where to tell you to get a trailer, sorry. Have you tried the Bargain Post?

Becky

I like this one!

You know my brother is selling me his purple PT Cruiser? I don't know when...probably in July.
