The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Ours have never stood at shows either. They are usually 3 days long so we’re there a day ahead of time and get stalls.

We camp a lot and get stalls. Most places we go to have stall rentals, makes it easier.

I just wish it would rain at night and be clear during the day:)

I don't mind it much if it rains during the week when I am at work. I hate it when it messes up my weekends. I am worried about hay, we may have trouble again this year getting it and not paying an arm and a leg for it.

We just never have tried. Our shows have the stabling. Had plans to go on a judged pleasure trail ride once and that would have involved tying. Wouldn’t you know the truck battery died and never made the ride. That was the last year they had it.

Fast forward a few years to now. Ride is back on for this year and I’d really like to participate. Plan on taking Deuce, but since we have a 3 horse I just may open the dividers and use it as a big stall to saddle, etc.

I didn’t realize that. Duh, now that I think of it the one horse park around here that has extensive trails does have barns because they also put on shows and rodeos to generate revenue.

Was there to visit a friend last year who was showing and camping and I couldn’t believe how scenic and peaceful it was.

Sometimes I think that we’re too wrapped up in the show ring stuff and need to step back more and relax with the horses and do more of this.

I got the impression you can’t tie them either?

They make those anti pull halters, has anyone ever tried one of those?

There is nothing more relaxing that being on horseback in the woods, at least to me. It makes everything else just seem to disappear.

We got a little bit of a sprinkle this morning but it’s cleared off now. I was hoping that it would stick around a little bit longer. :-(

I talked to my hay guy last night and got on his list for 28 rolls. I’ve still got 20-something rolls left from last year so between that and the new stuff I should be set for this year. He had no idea how much it was going to cost yet though. I paid him $40 a roll last year and thought that was awful, but I haven’t seen any ads for less than $60 in a while, so I’m kinda dreading what he’s going to say. I sure hope we get more rain than we got last year, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen so far.

Speaking of showing, a friend of mine sent me a link to a Photobucket album she set up of pictures she took this past weekend of the Cross Country portion of the Rolex 3 Day Event in Kentucky. She really got some awesome pictures too. I just find it amazing that those horses will go over stuff that big and that the people have nerves enough to do it. It makes me nervous just looking at it...

Especially the ones where the landing is far below the takeoff. Off a cliff into water seems to be a favorite obstacle. Those scare the bejeebers out of me. When I was jumping, It wasn't the ~up~ part that made me nervous, I lost my nerve on the downhill side of the jump... in the landing. When the fences I was jumping got to about 4 feet, it felt like the horse was going straight down on landing. I always got the sensation that the horse would collapse or somersault... Never did of course, but I lost my nerve and was stiff as a board. I love little jumps. It's a really neat feeling.

Meeeee too!! But I do like the little jumps too, as long as I can see what's on the other side. The water ones would really freak me out. I'd be afraid that their feet would jam up into the mud and they'd flip on over. Those eventers are crazy!

That’s what I fear every time I watch those.

We bought a round bale last month for $35 and it was stored inside and looked pretty good. We do not have anywhere to store the round bales so have to get square bales. Going to put our name on the list for the first cutting and hope he has a good crop this year. Lasst years 3rd cutting was awful.

Boy the leftover hay we’re getting is sure sad stuff. The horses are using it as bedding and to poop on and doing their best to find enough grass to eat instead. We’re probably about a month from the first cutting here.

I did notice that she had pics of one wreck. The gray horse on a 2-level jump. But the pictures appear to be kind of backwards in the album so you saw the crash landing first, then the events that let up to it. It looked to me like the horse missed the first level of the jump with his right front leg and I’ll bet it threw his balance off and he just didn’t think he could clear the log at the top so he balked. It just gives me heart attacks when I see stuff like that.

Yeah - It looks like he was lucky to get up the first ledge and couldn’t get it together for the log. Those are tough obstacles... Part of me thinks, it shouldn’t have to be that dangerous to be good sport, and a good test of skill. The ledge doesn’t have to have that big hole in front of it, for example.

...doing their best to find enough grass to eat instead...

They're probably getting plenty if they're anything like mine. I quit letting mine into where the hay ring is last month some time. They were mostly eating outside anyways and they're all way too fat so I just closed it off. If it gets real dry this summer I may have to start putting hay out again, but I'm hoping that that won't happen.

Same here, although I do give Jake a flake or two here and there, he needs more than the other two.

I hope they are... I’m in that time of year when I start worrying about too much grass, but I have not closed them out of the front pasture at all this year, so it’s pretty grazed down to nubbins. I know horses can founder on short grass, but it seems to me if they’re having to walk around and hunt for grass that’s actually tall enough to bite off, that they’re OK.
