The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Damn stupid of the gummint to do that (but what else is new, usually the gummint ruins anything it gets its hands on.) It's not like the horses had subversive sympathies or anything . . . shame to spoil a breed like that.

The Mandans had nice looking horses too, when George Catlin painted them.

Put on their horse blanket and just turn it up at the tail. That, and tucking a towel around the dock, should do it.

(I have a lot of experience in this area!)

I never use more than about a 1/4 cup in a gallon bucket - that's the absolute top limit if her white foot is stained with red clay. Usually more like 1/8 cup. Don't let it stay on too long or it will burn the skin, what it does is combine with the fat in the hair or the oil on the skin to make soap (that's how they used to make soap in the old days).

Then have the hose standing by and rinse it thoroughly, then shampoo and rinse thoroughly again, then lots of conditioner.

Btw, bleach has no effect on hair in drains. Ammonia is probably what they're using.

Linus was unbelievably stupid, but I think he must have been dropped on his head or something. I agree with you that most Apps are smart — often cranky, but smart.

Wow! THAT’s a trail ride! Pretty impressive, looks like the hunt club Poker Ride or something! That’s the only time we get that many folks together.

I've got that inner ear thingy too. Doesn't interfere with my riding any more now that I have the proper meds for it.

About the only time it bothers me now is if I practice aikido (judo) rolls for 30 minutes or so!

Lotta horses! Glad you had a good ride! It was forecast to be rainy here today, and the rest of the week for that matter, so we decided we wouldn’t be riding and left our trailer at Bob’s, since we’re hauling alpacas from there on Friday, but it’s actually nice and sunny here today. Hmmmph.

hmmmph.

Rosie’s across town and she keeps reporting thunder and hail. dark clouds all around, but nothing has actually fallen out of the sky, yet.

We did manage to clean stalls and go get hay, as long as it was still dry.

Good Morning.

Sorry to hear that some of you are having not so nice weather. It has been really nice here. Temps in low 70's and sunny. A vet is coming to our fairgrounds tonight to give shots. We will take a couple over to save on a farm call. A friend of the kids, who is a barrel racer, wants to know how to show pleasure. My daughter is going to help her. She can ride Bodie and Jody while I am still recuperating. My eyes have to be kept clear of dust.

Frog, great pictures. I can't wait to get out there and do some trail riding with a nice group. It's the camping I love. My trailer should be ready in a few weeks....yay!

Good morning! Had a chance to look back at some of the messages and those pics are awesome. Would love to go on a ride like that but can’t imagine our boys being good about the camping part.

Hope your eyes are recovering well. Hopefully you won’t be down for too long because we’re in for some beautiful weather.

Our first show is a week from today...I think that’s when it’s supposed to rain again, of course.

A full hay bag tends to make the best camping horses. If they stand at a show, you would not have any problems. There are always worries about getting loose, tangled in ropes and the weather. Good planing and common sense to make sure everyone is safe. My biggest concern was riding with a bunch of Yahoos, who had no regard for other riders.

Ours have never stood at shows either. They are usually 3 days long so we’re there a day ahead of time and get stalls.

My mom’s old horse did used to go to one day hunter shows. That sucker pulled away from so many trailers she lost count. It was like a game. He wasn’t bad before and he was fine after. But it was like it wasn’t an outing if he didn’t get to be bad. Good thing he was so good at his job and placed very well!

So have you ever tried to fix the problem of pulling back? If so what did you do?

Send some our way! We are 12 inches below average and everything is turning brown!

We have a great group of riders around here. You will have to come camp at KC Ranch in Double Springs. They have stalls and electrical hook ups and good trails.

I know, I’m trying not to complain because last year we were in the shape you are in now.

I just wish it would rain at night and be clear during the day:)

Still raining this morning.

Honestly I don’t remember. This was 20 years ago. I think she only went to the one day shows for one summer. We have arabs and have enough breed shows in the area that we just ended up going to them and getting stabling.

Oh no, I was talking about the horses you have now. I got the impression you can’t tie them either?
