The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Well, they've been showing pictures that viewers sent in, I figured mine were better than some of the ones they were showing, so I sent them some. :~)

So don't get frostbite standing in the fridge trying to sort all that out! ;o)
Ha, I'll try not to. She does run me ragged with all that she has me do. You're wicked close on the Feline Distemper. It's called Feline Panleukopenia. (I'll confess... I looked it up!) :-p So you're right. I'd never be able to spell the darn thing. I know that the kennel cough is called Bordetella... something-something. I want to call it Bordetella Burgodofi, but I know that B. Burgodofi is Lyme... so that isn't it. Well hell. :-D Next week is going to be wicked busy with spays and neuters... It's the after holiday rush.

Today though, was pretty wild. I want to run some horse things that my boss does that I don't really agree with... 1) She doesn't feed pellets, she feeds beet pulp (what looks like it) and sweet feed. She said that he gains weight on the pellets, so she doesn't feed it to him. But I wonder why she feeds the sweet feed too... In my opinion, he's not working, so he doesn't need it, and it could be a little bit of the reason why he's been so darn hot. I don't agree with her horse handling skills either.... today she was trying to vacuum him, and of course he hated it and was jumping and blowing and being stupid. I was holding him, and he struck out at me, so I let him have a good wallop, and I shouted at him as loud as I could. She got mad at me for doing that. Then he was being more stupid, and so she wrapped her hand in the lead rope when he pulled back! I almost fell on the ground. My brain was screaming "Not safe! Not safe!" She also had me wedged in the corner by the barn and the vacuum, and I was lucky that I didn't get squished.

lol. It was, actually, compared to some of the stuff I've had to do lately.
I have an interview for another job on Wednesday in Boston. Wish me luck!

...kennel cough is called Bordetella...

Heh, sounds like some kinda fancy pasta.

As for the pellets, I don't like them either. I've had horses choke on them and that ain't fun. Some people claim that they can cause colic, but I don't know about that. I've fed beet pulp before, back when I was trying to get Tennessee's insulin resistance under control, but it's a royal pain in the butt and I wouldn't mess with it again unless I absolutely had no other choice. It needs to be soaked before you feed it or they can choke or colic on it because it swells up when it gets wet. I fed some to Grace one time without soaking it first because they won't hardly eat it when it's wet and she started acting colicy and I had to call the vet out to give her some mineral oil, so I won't ever do that again either. I agree with you about the sweet feed thing too. If the horse isn't working, just the beet pulp and hay should be all he needs, aside from some vitamin supplements.

I can't believe she got onto you for whacking a horse who struck at you. I'd've beat the crap outta him. That's just plain dangerous and he needs to know that he WILL NOT do that, no matter WHAT you're doing to him. And you'd think she'd know better than to wrap her hand in a lead. People lose fingers that way. If you're lucky, all you loose is the skin on the palm of your hand, but that's darned painful too. Sounds like she needs to take some lessons from YOU, but I know that probably ain't gonna happen, so all you can do is to try to watch out for YOURSELF. Let her so stupid things if she wants to, but don't let her get you hurt. After all, this is just temporary job. You need to be able to work for the rest of your life and no job is as important as your health and safety. Hang in there!

Pony is letting it go to her head... she asked me if her blankets made her butt look big ;~)

I fed them some hay out in the sun so they'd get out and move around some, it's cold in the shade but the sun feels nice.

I took this picture of me'n'Bay's shadows.

Heeeeey, Pony's got back! Maybe she's going for the Jennifer Lopez look, trying to see if she can attract a studley QH type. ;o)

It's enviromental chemistry stuff. I can't say where just yet, because who knows who reads the forum, but it would be a decent job if I got it. I have to go online and look up the subway route beacuse I'll be taking the train in.

so all you can do is to try to watch out for YOURSELF.
She's a good vet, and she takes good care of him, but some of the things she does makes me scratch my head. For instance, he refuses to tie, so she ground ties him... and that sort of works. He's a good horse, just very blow-y and jumpy, but today he was being completely stupid, and if it was me, I would've put a chain shank over his nose, and not put up with half of the crap. Chain shanks are pretty amazing that way... it makes every horse that I've ever used it on immediately snap to attention, and pay more attention to it than to what you're doing to them. What I think that was making him that way, was that a static charge was building up on his coat, and zapping him. I say that because the charge was traveling on the plastic of the hose and zapping me while I was standing there holding him. I told her, but she just said that he was afraid of the hose itself. Who knows what it was.

Thanks, I'll try not to. :-) Fortunately, every train but the E train takes you to where I'm going, but unfortunately, usually when I'm in Boston, I TAKE the E train so I could see myself doing that out of habit and then going "Oh Sh!t!"
