The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Good morning!

In other news, we also went to our trainer's to get Ruby started on force fetching.

Before we got down to business, we met the trainer's new little Golden pup, Jazz . . .

"I would be SO gorgeous, if my ear didn't have this tendency to flip up!"

OK, now I am a gorgeous girl!

Then we got down to real business . . .

Tim demonstrating how to get the pup to "Hold" a leather glove (don't try bare hands - it's ouchy!)

"OK, Mom, if you say so."

Now for a small bumper . . .

"Mmmmmph! HRRRRMPPPHHH!"

"That wasn't so bad, was it?"

Rewarded with a partridge.

Off into the sunset with the partridge!

. . . her finger's closed on the trigger . . . maybe that's immediately post-recoil?

What do you think of the .30-30 compared to .308? My mom's deer rifle is a .30-30, mine is a .308. I don't like her rifle, but I think it's the fault of the rifle, not the caliber.

Could be... Like I said, I just don’t know. She was getting as much instruction as she could take in at once, and did pretty well for a first time. ;~)

I’ve not fired a lot of rifles, so I felt pretty clumsy with it, honestly... I’ve always been a handgun gal, with a little shotgun once in awhile. So I can’t compare to other kinds... Just getting used to this one :~)

Hi ladies!
I bought the latest edition of the want ads, and found the horse that that lady supposedly "sold" advertised! I'm so... "grrrr" about it. Flabbergasted, Annoyed, and Ticked off! What I do want to know is what she didn't like about us that she wouldn't sell him and had to lie about it.

You have to do what works best for you but I would just ask her. Call and ask if the horse is still for sale and then ask why. I still think she probably is just needing the money now and it’s nothing to do with what she saw with you. Another thing is that some people just want things out of their life when they decide to move on. Maybe she would be sad with him near. You never know until you ask.

We rented the Bobcat, but it was still too wet to do what we wanted to do. At least the manure pile that was outside the fence, in the gravel, was moved. My SIL also moved the slag pile that had been sitting for 2 years. A bulldozer would have been better.

You can see how he was sinking and making ruts. Now it is suppose to storm, so we will be on hold again.

She sure is getting pretty. Won’t they hold anything in their mouth if not trained to do so? The lab I adopted, will not fetch anything. He was over a year old when I got him, so someone didn’t play with him much.

Oh, they'll carry stuff around in their mouths - most Labs start off REALLY mouthy.

The trick is to teach them that they have to pick stuff up and hold it when YOU tell them to, not when they feel like it. And they have to hold it til YOU tell them "drop".

You might start your Lab by teasing him with a bumper and seeing if you can get him interested. Some of them just aren't, even Labs. It may be that your adopted Lab washed out of somebody's training program, and that's why he was adopted out.

A friend of mine got a Lab by chance -- took him out to the hunting club to see what he could do. They threw a bumper for him, and he sat there and looked at them like, "Did you want me to do something with that?" Then somebody fired a shotgun, and the poor dog cowered down. They tried to get him to jump in the pond, and he put one toe in and then drew back.

They're calling him "The Anti-Lab". He's a really good house pet though, so his wife has adopted him as her canine companion.

It sure is looking slick and rutty there in the manure pile . . . I'm always afraid they'll hit a tree when it gets like that . . . .

. . . and thanks for your kind words for Ruby. She IS a pretty pup! She's calming down - not as bouncy, but on the other hand she is really bonded and she keeps chasing poor Shelley away from me. So we crate her at night and Shelley gets the bedroom all to herself (and us).

Bobcats are fun:)

I told my son I wanted him to bring mine home....he’s had it working on his drive way. Everytime he gets it smoothed and ready for gravel it rains again and the drive gets all rutted again. BUT, I need it, he’s had it down there for the last year, and I’ve got lots of things I need done with it:)..I have some manure too that needs to be moved.

He needs to get his OWN Bobcat!

Family's family, but a year is long enough!

He was a stray that no one claimed. A vet’s office had him and was going to put him down, because they had him for quite sometime. He flunked his drug sniffing test, but they did use him for a transfusion. It really doesn’t bother me that he does not fetch, as he is a great dog around kids and other animals.

It would be nice to have one around all the time. It just gets so frustrating, that it is so wet around here.

Storms are coming, so I better log for now.

Talk to you all tomorrow.

I wonder if the lady had pre-paid for the ad . . . or if the paper forgot to take it out.

You could always just call and find out! Her other buyer may have fallen through at the last minute -- or the ad may be running by mistake, or she may not have called the paper and told them the horse sold (a lot of papers have a "run it til it sells" deal).

I would call -- you may be getting mad for no reason. Or she may now want to sell the horse to you!

. . . we had a buyer fall through when we sold our first house, we had a contingent contract with a second buyer, who wound up buying it.

I’m in a huff because it wasn’t there until this week. :-) I know because I’ve been looking in there every week for horses. As Roseofsharn would say, “I’m gobsmacked!” :-)

It may be she thought she had the horse sold and it fell through. Call her and check just in case.

Just got a call from the outside mare owner that bred to Sonny last year. She had a filly today, star and the color is “dirty blonde” ??? We’ll try to get out there this coming weekend to see her but it sounds like she must be colored about like Sam.
