The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I was wondering the other night, after I’d turned the computer off, if you had talked to the guy yet about the cost, and what his reaction was. Forgot to ask the next day.

Well, he said “no problem” - I hope that means he’ll have a check today. I told him “we’re picking it up Tuesday” as a clue that we wanted it then.

The funniest part of this whole thing was when we went over there with the invoice in our hand, looking for him, the clerk we know best was at the counter. We asked “is he here?” “I don’t know where he is.... [the wife] is in the kitchen though... why?” And she tips her head like she knows something’s up. We say “well he backed into our trailer the other day, this is the estimate to fix it” she laughs... “Oh - you better give it directly to him... he probably hasn’t even told her about it!”

I think that’s funny anyhow.

That’s great about the Clinton Anderson Clinic. I’ll bet that’ll be lots of fun. But if it’s anything like the Parelli ones I’ve been to, don’t expect a whole lot of actual detailed training information. These two-day things that they do are mainly vehicles to hook new disciples to their method and set you on the path to enlightenment through spending a lot of money on their DVDs, books and equipment. They are entertaining though, and like you say, the price ain’t bad for two people for two days. The food service will break you though.

Good morning - I think breeding buckskin to buckskin will get you a buckskin or a bay or maybe a cremelo. My understanding is that there is no albino in the horse world.

Maybe it is more of a pigment issue than true albinism. (is that a word?) I know with my Lakeland Terriers we cannot breed two reds because you loose pigment. You will get more of a liver colored or self colored pigment rather than the preferred black.

Really? I’ve seen white horses with pink skin and pink-looking eyes, but maybe they were just really light cremellos. I always just thought they were albinos. What’s the deal with them? Is there some kind of fatal gene with them or what? I’ve heard of Fatal White Syndrome in Paints, and I knew that a homozygous roan would never even get to the stage of implanting in the uterine wall. But that’s about all I’ve heard of.

He did have a neat little gadget that I thought about buying one time though. It was some kind of an anti-pullback ring that you hooked to the wall and then ran your rope through it somehow. It kinda looked like the buckle off of a cinch, with the tongue and all, and the way you ran your rope through it provided just enough drag when the horse pulled back and the rope slid through it to feel pretty firm to the horse, but wasn’t like them being tied to something solid so they didn’t panic as much and they usually stopped pulling after 4 or 5 feet and nothing got broke. So they were still tied when they got done with their fit. I don’t know if any of that made sense, but it looked like a pretty useful little thingie to have if you had a puller.

As I understand (which may be totally wrong) those horses are cremelos or perlinos. The fatal white in paints will always die shortly after birth and the homozygous roan won’t make it full term. and a FWIW, a cremelo or perlino will always throw color.

I wanted to share this photo with the list. This is Dillon, he is a dog I bred and co-own that is being campaigned right now. This is his 5th Canadian All Breed Best In Show. We are very proud of him.

Wow! He’s gorgeous! I can see why he’s winning Best In Show. Looks like he’s got all the right stuff in all the right places.

Garden question:)

So what do you do about planting summer flowers where your pansies are?

My pansies are still really really pretty, they have really gotten large. But I know they will die out, just not sure if they will die out in time to get the summer flowers in? I hate just pulling them up when they are looking so nice. I’ve planted a few things among them, but they take up a good portion of the planting area.

What to do?

Becky
