The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

It seems like she is now very comfortable in the barn (?) hard to say what got to her but I'll be electrical in nature.

So - when ARE you going to get tired of that horse? :)

I've seen geldings mount and penetrate mares in heat but only geldings that were 1) proud cut or 2) used as a breeding stallion for a good while before gelding.

Have you changed his feed and/or supplements lately? Almost sounds hormonal so if no change in feed, keep an eye on him for maybe a tumor, thyroid change, something like that. I only suggest that because his behavior is unusual for him.

I'd give him one more chance since the vet asked, but only if the farrier is suitably contrite and makes every effort to fix the problem. (having previous dealt with know it all farriers who think they can do no wrong and the vet doesn't know what she's talking about)

We've developed a theory. All horses occassionally pull shoes and all horses at times become lame, however, when it happens constantly or gets in the way of riding or a show, it's time to find a hungrier farrier.

Oh dear... we've been caught ;~).

Well, good to know what it is, but I do so feel for you at having to make farrier decisions...

Maybe if we do get a wild hair to breed her we'll send her down to you for breeding. If we could get a registerable Appy out of her we could get into the Appaloosa Club up at the forest. :~)

I took some pictures but I'm having trouble getting them uploaded....

They aren't as good as yours, though. Too far away.

"You're falling down on the job by not getting pictures!"

I'm embarrassed to say that I did get pics. Trying to get them uploaded...

If you got color and a colt, then gelded it, you could register under a hardship clause. Arab is an acceptable cross to the Appaloosa Horse Club but not mustang. You'd think appaloosas originally came from some high dollar breed from Europe instead of spanish mustangs the way they act :)

Oh - I didn't realize they wouldn't allow that cross... I thought since Arabs and QHs were allowed, they'd allow other crosses as long as it came out colored.

Well, crum :~)

Huh, that's interesting. I will keep an eye on him. The mounting behavior is very unusual for Bud, I've never seen him do it in all the time I've owned him. Even when Winnie was in heat before, sticking her butt in his face, he always ignored her.

I'll be doing spring shots pretty soon, I'll mention it to the vet when he comes out.

I forgot to answer your question, no, no change in feed or supplements.

I don't envy you. I'll do just about anything to avoid a confrontation with the farrier.

Yep, since the vet is going to be out anyway, ask him about it. It really sounds like an overload of testoserome doesn't it? Seems like there would be some reason for that.

Hair, just a suggestion. When you get your place, please keep some empty stalls just for pasture horses or put up a lean to in the pasture that they can get out of the rain and north wind. The owner and I are barely speaking from the last cold front. I'm not rich. I'm just dependable. No need to kiss up, I guess. I was told today that if it got cold there were would be no stalls available. That's fine. It is supposed to get down in the 30s and rain. I'll just put them in the barn and tie them up and maybe set up a cot. She is going to lose me over this.

Will do. In our climate, there will be no pasture board without at least a run-in shelter.

I think it might be worse and even more necessary here because of the drastic changes.
