This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Seems like scrapes like that bleed more than deeper more defined cuts. I really don’t know why, but I’m just glad that it wasn’t any worse than it was. I’ll bet he’ll really give the new guy the BigEye when he comes the next time.
I’ll be interested to see what he looks like whenever you feel comfortable taking a picture of him. A tattoo on the back of the head sounds a bit bizarre to me, but then it seems like tattoos are becoming quite common on just ordinary people these days. When I was younger, the only people who had tattoos were gang members, skinheads and ruffians, so I guess I’m showing my age.
I heard a farrier say one time that horses are like little old ladies, they love to put their feet into warm slippers!
I kinda like the smell, probably association with happy times as a kid holding horses for the farrier.
It’s hard to say how deep it is. You can’t get very deep there without hitting bone... there’s nothing but skin and bone there. I think the vet wrap on it discourages it from swelling up any too, if it was going to.
He’s due for shots, we’ve been putting it off ‘cuz we had taxes this month...
I don’t think Bay thought it felt like a slipper when Mark did it. - He always sorted some at the smoke. About the time he was going to come unglued, it was done.
What I would do in addition to the Neosporin and soaping it up very well with Betadine is to soak your arm in warm water and Betadine 2x a day, for about 20 minutes. Just get a good book and a chair to sit next to the sink!
Just scrubbing doesn't always get all the dirt & debris out, soaking floats the stuff out. It also helps with healing. You want to be careful since you know that knife was just brimming with all sorts of nasty germs . . .
Well, I really don't know, but I would say it is much easier to shape the shoe to the horse that way. Too many shape the hoof to the shoe. Our old farrier used to make the shoes from a piece of steel. He didn't use keg shoes.
And it's not really an 'accident'. He knew the trailer was there and wasn't careful enough backing up. That's what ticks me off. He knew it was a tight fit and he did it anyway... that's why he's going to pay for it. That ticks me off.
You could stash 4 traffic cones in the back of the trailer and just set them out on the corners of the trailer when you're in a parking lot. That way the local bad drivers will hit the cones instead.
I always take traffic cones to the dog trials, the parking is usually pretty haphazard and that way I can always open my car doors! I have them anyway because we use them for dog agility and for marking blinds when the dogs are learning . . .
The weird thing about it is that I didn’t think it was gonna bleed at first. I was pulling on a fairly hard flake of sole when the knife slipped off so I must’ve hit it fairly hard, but since I didn’t see any blood right off I really didn’t think anything about it. But when I looked again I had this nice clean inch long gash in my arm that was just beginning to ooze. It didn’t really start to bleed until I messed with it a few minutes trying to get the edges to go back together. I think that when there’s blunt force trama in addition to a cut, it must kinda seal off the blood vessels or something because the same kinda thing happened one time when I got bucked off my sister’s horse on a chert road and landed in a bunch of big rocks. I had a 4 inch hole in my knee but it didn’t bleed. Very strange.
Traffic cones wouldn’t have helped with ~our~ neighbor...
I used to work for a highway construction company, and being a pack rat I have all sorts of stuff!
You think he'll make good on his promise to pay for the fix?
Yeah - he’ll pay for it, I’m sure.
Our trailer was parked where it always is... he was trying to back his own trailer full of dirt into a tight spot past it, and instead of asking for help or for us to move, he just kept backing up blind. He’s driving a van pulling a little trailer, I’m not even sure he can see it. But he could see ours. It wasn’t in a surprise location.
You have the same passive-aggressive streak my husband has... he said the same thing :~)
lol! Great minds... :-)
Well, the local farrier (the one we use to keep Queen trimmed, not the NB one) called the house last night to say they would be in the area and if we needed any horses done. So I asked if they would reset Blade and Jake’s NB shoes. We will see how good a job he does. WIll try to get pictures tomorrow. It sure would save us time and money having to drive the 2 hours to have Pistol do them if he does a decent job. I like these farriers, it is a father and son team and the wife/mother schedules al their appointments and they call YOU when they will be in your area and they have ALWAYS shown up within 30 minutes of their scheduled time. That says a lot for the farrier profession now days.
Well good! I was wondering when you were going to be able to get your reshod again since you didn’t make it up here the last time I had mine done. I sure hope the local guys work out. At least now you have a pretty good idea about how a properly applied set of NB shoes SHOULD look so you should be able to tell right away whether or not you want to continue to let these guys do them. And it’s really a plus if they are as reliable as as you say. That’s a pretty rare thing as far as farriers go. Although Pistol has always been right there when he says he will, and is usually even early. He’s only cancelled on me twice, and that was when he was either sick or had a horse emergency, and he called and rescheduled beforehand both times. So I can’t complain about him at all.
You may be giving me more credit than is due here. I still have a problem seeing some things. I will take pictures for your critique!

I (like Hair) feel like I am cheating on Pistol. I like hime and what he as done for our horses and if he were not so far away would not even think about using anyone else!
I don’t think he’ll blame you a bit for getting somebody else closer to home. Even he has said that he can’t believe that you drive all the way up here when you have somebody right next door who can do just as good a job. I think he was referring to the other guy that you can never get to come, but the same principle applies.
