The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

He only cold-shaped the shoes... tried several sizes on him before choosing one, and he didn’t even have a forge in his truck. Do NB not hot shoe? Or is that just this guy?

I’ve never had a farrier hot shoe:\...Chris, sometimes in the winter, and the new farrier did it last time, heated up the shoe to make shaping it easier, but did not put the hot shoe on the foot.

I think trying him with out the pads is a good idea too. When are you going to try him:)?

Well I’m glad you liked him. I didn’t know if you were going to let him use the NB shoes or just regular shoes, so I was glad to see that you chose the NB. And I think that removing the pads is a good idea too. When you go on your next trail ride, I’ll be interested to hear if you think he moves differently. I think that ecurbh will be able to tell a difference in Cyn over time too. Her feet weren’t bad, but they had more toe and heel than I liked. Did Pony still have her overgrown cuticle problem?

My guy just cold shoes. As a matter of fact, I’ve never had anybody who hot shoed. The only time my guy uses the forge is if I have him add borium to the heels.

How old of a guy was he? how long has he been a farrier? full or part time?

Did you tell him he and his work would be investigated by a bunch of internet women:)?

Let me amend my last post...he uses the forge when he puts drill-tek on the heels. It's basically the same stuff as borium, but borium has to be applied with a torch and he didn't want to have to haul an oxygen tank around in his truck in addition to the forge. Drill-tek is what they put on the teeth of well digging bits so that they cut through rocks and don't wear down. I just didn't want anybody to think I didn't was totally stupid.

LOL!!! It's probably best not to tell him that, he'd probably run screaming for the hills. ;o)

I don’t think he had anything but NB shoes in his truck.

He’s a fairly young guy.... late twenties maybe? He has a wife and 5 kids... but how long he’s been shoeing, I didn’t ask. He’s a recent enough graduate of the school up there, I think.

Pony’s cuticles are still overgrown like that, but I didn’t bring it up, and neither did he. I felt like it’d been asked and answered.

I told him I had ‘internet buddies’ that had talked about Bay’s feet before... I suppose he assumed I’d be posting new pictures, but I didn’t say so directly

Jeez Louise!!! And in his late 20's! The man's been busy! But at least you know that he needs the work so hopefully he'll be reliable and prompt.

I'm heading home, but I'll check in later for more pictures if you decide to take them...Seeya!

Our nice new horse trailer got it's first dent this morning... the store owner was backing in his little trailer with a load of dirt for his garden and caught a corner on the fender, then tried to pull forward again to free himself, and pulled the molding loose. We heard the ruckus and came running out to see what happened.

He said "No problem, I pay you for whatever cost to fix." Well, yeah, damn straight you will. :-\

Grrr, the rat bastage. This new owner is turning into even more of a pain in the ass than Richard ever was. Tomorrow we'll be taking the trailer down to the place we bought it to see if they can fix it.

Oh, wow, what a mess. What a maroon. They will be able to fix that, I’m sure.

Sometime when I know him better, I’ll take his picture. He has a tattoo on the back of his head. :~)

OK - so you guys aren’t used to hot shoeing... I didn’t know it wasn’t that common. Mark always heated them red-hot to shape them and smoked ‘em on.

I asked if I should give Bay a few days to adjust to the new feet before riding... and he said he thought Bay’d be fine to go tomorrow... but I think it’s going to rain. Raining now, started just after we came back inside, and Saturday we’re supposed to go up to the beach house.

So I dunno... may be Sunday or Monday before we go, or when the weather clears, whichever comes first. :~)

I don’t think it does any harm to let Bay walk around on his own a few days anyhow.

Never had hot shoeing in 15 years and more than half a dozen different farriers. Like Frog said the only time was when they put Drill Tek on. Bay's feet look nice. Jake had a long toe and underslung heels and it took 3 shoeings before we noticed a big difference but we did notice an immediate difference in the way he gaited. He used to stumble alot and hardly ever does now.
