The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

It is nippy here too this morning, but there is a feel in the air that it is going to be a very nice day, but we are heading back to cooler and rain after today:(.

Good Morning.

We will be getting rain for the next few days also. Temps in hgh 40's. Better than 20's and snow.

Hair and Ecurbh, I am glad someone can get the spring time projects done. :)

Very odd weather yesterday afternoon . . . spitting a light rain, very cold and windy.

The horses loved it. Miss Gracie was feeling her oats and actually bucked a couple of times . . . she was above the bit and snorting and trying to run . . . but after about 15 minutes of work at the collected trot she settled down!

It always seems like bad weather clears the air or something and the day after is usually just crystal clear.

I noticed on my way in that after the rain even the colors are more intense. The green is so much brighter. Supposed to rain again Friday night and Saturday I hear.

I still toy with the idea of shoeing with NB shoes, but now I’m torn because Harley is doing so well, but it’s for the long term effects I wonder about.

Well, imho, considering all the problems that Harley has had, and the good job that this shoer has done in fixing them, I say if it ain't broke don't fix it! :-)

Had a beautiful day yesterday, and I actually got to ride. Had another good ride on Oliver, and I’m finally getting him to look and move like an honest to god dressage horse. My trainer thinks it’s great, but calls it “Doing his Dressage Horse Impression” :-)

LOL...I’m not changing anything at all for the present...I’m looking at the future.

I’m watching closely for flare in the hoof wall...if I start to see that, then I’d probably talk to the farrier about that. The whole theory that NB has on that issue just makes so much sense to me.

But as you say, he’s not showing any of that now, so I’m leaving well enough alone. I just like to know everything I can about my options.

Well, like you said earlier, your new farrier knows the NB protocols, so even though he may not be using TheShoes, he’s probably trimming him that way, which is a lot better than the other guy you were using.

It is a good example of how rhythmic horses are. They will try to keep a beat, and the choice of music was perfect for that horse and that performance.

New farrier has been and gone :~)

Here's Bay's right front:

Rest of the pictures of his other feet HERE at photobucket

If you want to compare to the last shoe job... the old pictures are about half-way down on this thread: Horse.com forum... A look at Bay's foot

His right hind is bandaged because we had a bit of a mishap. The shoer was on one side, working on the back, and he thought (or had a moment of not thinking) that he could just give his cart a push and roll it under Bay to the other side. Bay freaked out and left the ground, came down on the cart, dumping the contents and cutting his leg on it. Not bad, we just cleaned it up and wrapped it to stop the bleeding and keep it clean. Bay was a little tense and difficult for the rest of the job... He won't soon forget the new shoer's scary cart. New shoer learned something about A-rab horses too, I think ;~)

Do try to watch that horse... When she breaks into the ~passage~ (trot) and the music starts that two beat rhythm, it’s really remarkable.

Well what do you think of them now?

Did the guy talk much, explain things?

Too bad about the accident...was he embrassed?

I noticed, no pads...what did he say about that, was that OK with you?

What did he say about Cyn’s feet?

Did he make any comments about the old shoe job?

We need details:)

Looks like a really good job to me. The shoes have good placement and his toes and heels look good. So what do you think about it? Did you like the guy, other than the fact that he injured your horse? And I wanna see Cyn’s foot too. Her bare foot will tell the tale. And how did Pony do? Questions, questions questions!! ;o)

I like him... yeah - he was pretty embarrassed about the cart mishap, I think because Bay’d been so good so far, like a 26 year old horse might be expected to be, that he forgot he was still an A-rab horse :~)

Bent up his new rolly cart too ;~)

He didn’t say a LOT about Mark’s previous work, other than that he had too much toe and underrun heels. We talked about the pads, and that we weren’t really sure what they had been doing for him, Bay doesn’t have thin soles, and that’s all they would have really helped to protect... so I’ll see if he seems ouchy on the rocky areas or not when we go. I’m sortof glad to not have the pads there holding in moisture, I don’t think that’s particularly good for him.

I’ll go out in a bit and catch Cyn again... take some pics of her feet too, if you’d like to see those. He commented doing her that his rasp wasn’t sharp enough any more. Her feet are so hard. He was a little nervous around Cyn because we warned him she was marish and he was still a little rattled from the Bay/cart fiasco.

Pony was good for him. He liked her better’n most ponies. He thought her feet were flared... more than Cyn or Bay. He trimmed her up. :~)
