The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Do you have to take that much of a load to keep the job? Can you tell them how much you will do?

An interesting thing I heard today.

There is a small town east of here, Porter. Porter is know for all their peach orchards. Every spring it’s a gamble for them in case of late freezes, such as we just had this past weekend. There have been years where the whole crop gets wiped out, it always makes the news if there is going to be a freeze how the Porter peaches are endangered.

Anyway I heard today, that the peaches were saved this year in an interesting fashion. Helicopters flew over the orchards every night, to blow hot air down on the peach trees...and it worked. The temps got down in the upper 20’s but because of the helicopters the temps in the orchards was kept at 30 or above.

It’s hard for me to imagine that the cost of doing this can be off set enough...of course they are talking peaches will be more expensive this year...imagine that. Anyway, I thought that was pretty amazing.

did you just get a new one?

Yes, today. My daughter was glancing through it, when I was coloring her hair.

My crab apple looks bad and so do the tulips plants. I don’t think there will be much color here this year. There were a lot of crop losses. What a shame.

Well that would be where I’d start then. It never hurts to ask questions.

OK, with those three, you absolutely MUST get a troika!

It's considered very chic to rig the reins so that the outside horses' heads flare to the outside.

First, I'm sorry - I just saw this.

I would just be honest with the boss. Explain that you can't do a quality job auditing the charts if you've only got minutes to scan them. Also, no one can stay consistantly in top form without taking a break occassionally or stopping for lunch. Explain that you do want to do a quality job, not just rubber stamp the charts. It sounds like this should more than a part time position to be done properly. Oh, and good luck with it.

That would be cool wouldn't it. But I'm afraid I have a hard enough time with one set of reins for one horse, let alone 3. Driving is a nearly lost art these days.

They may just be trying to see how many charts you’ll do in a day before you say uncle. I’d definately ask them if it’s going to be this way all the time too. If it is then I’d tell them that you’ll do your absolute best but that you have to take a break every now and then and you have to eat lunch. Those are not unreasonable requests.

I took driving lessons, just for fun, but I never got beyond just ONE horse in a breaking cart!

If you can handle a double bridle or draw reins, it shouldn't be that difficult to add a horse once you have the basics down.

I've been working on walking my dogs together because often nobody else can help me exercise them. We really look pretty sharp now - they will heel and side (one on the left and one on the right) or they will both heel on the left. They are very cute when they get in step and carry their heads at the same angle -- the little one watches the big dog and imitates her.

The really "top sawyers" in the old days of the English Corinthians thought that the height of skill was to be able to drive a pair in tandem:

Of course, because the lead horse is in traces only, things like this did occasionally happen:

That’s interesting about the helicopters in the peach orchard, but I can’t see where that’d be cost effective either. But I guess if they can charge what ever the market will bear then it’s not their problem. The price of food in general is going to be unreal I guess. It already was because of the freeze they got in So. Cal, so this just adds fuel to the fire. I bought produce for a veggie tray for one of the parties over the weekend and just about fell out at how much they all cost. And the price of grain had already gone up really high too because a lot of the corn is going to ethanol production. I don’t know what poor people are going to do.

Good Morning.

The cost of feed has gone up here also. With the price of fuel and the bad weather, everything is going to have an increase in price.

You know to cover the cost of a bad year is OK,,,the thing is the prices won’t come back down in a good year.

LOL!!! The lead horse in that illustration looks like he's saying:
"If you hit me on the butt ONE MORE TIME with that whip I'm gonna eat your face for breakfast!!"

You'd definitely need to be an accomplished horseman to teach a horse to do that, or have an extremely cooperative horse.
