The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

That's a bum deal that your farrier didn't even call...It will be interesting to see what a NB farrier says about/ and does too Bay's feet. Looking forward to that.

I'm going to post the pictures from yesterday, then let the page load to look at your pictures Frog. Mine aren't as exciting, my rocks/caves not as big, but they are something to stroll down to and look at after a big meal:) Heading out:

The kids playing in the different caves.

Heading back home:

Nikki went with us. She managed to work her way down the cliff. But when we went back up, I was watching her from above and she just couldn't seem to find her way up. Charlie went down to get her, and lead her around an easier way. He landed up having to carry her part of the way. He think like I do that Nikki is senile...She would walk aways, then turn around and go the other way, then turn around...like she just didn't know where to go, and she's been there 100's of times. And she is deaf, so when you call her to follow she doesn't hear. She made it back home...but laid down in the front yard, and acted like she couldn't get up. I gave her a motrin and about an hour latter she was moving again. I guess she can't even go on short walks. I'm going to worry now that she could wonder off just from here and forget how to get home...you think that could happen.

One time Susie came running to me and I mentioned I'd like to catch a picture of her in mid air like that picture I posted a few weeks ago of the Jack Russell running towards the pictures taker. Mack and Charlie laughed that Susie could never get off the ground...too fat:(. But look at this one:), granted she's not as streamline as that other dog, but she's off the ground:) I was proud..LOL...they like to make fun of my dog.

Would you believe that I was in such a hurry to get gone that I forgot EVERY BIT of my tack!

No you didn't?! I'll bet you did get some razzin' over that. Hey looks like you had competition with your old fogies, there was another woman there? You are usually the only female in the group of old guys. Looks like a fun ride.

But it was better than not going at all!

Not interested in riding bare back? ;-)

Wow, those are fun-looking caves and rocks, and it’s cool that they’re that close to your house too. It looks like the kids were having a blast. That’d be a cool place to have a camp-out and build a campfire and all that.

That’s a shame about Nikki having a hard time. She loves to go so much that I know you hate to have to leave her.

Wow...those are great pictures....

LOL about forgetting your tack...don’t feel bad, I was driving out the drive way to go to a competition one time and hadn’t loaded the horse... Charlie stopped me and asked if I didn’t think I needed to get her:) Good think someone had an extra with them. I take all the extra tack out of my trailer when I’m going to be leaving it at a trail head, other wise it all stays all the time in the tack room. If I had to load tack every time, I’d forget half of it every time too.

Looks like you did have a nice large group. I love the mule. Beautiful country to ride in.

Yeah, her name is Kerry and she and her husband live close by. You'll probably get to meet them before long. They're both real nice. They ride the two champagne horses in the pictures.

I was going to say that - at least you remembered the horse.

I drove off to a dog show one time, had all my gear but left the dog in the yard. Glad I remembered before I got to the show 8 hours away!

Believe me, I thought about it, but no I wouldn't really want to have to do that. Not on those hills. I'd either be flying off over her head or over her butt the whole time.

Years ago the kids that lived around here use to use those caves as party spots..They had an old couch in the big one that Blake and JP are standing in, and a..ahem..bed in one of the ones that are behind Charlie and Kristy in that one picture. There were nights when there would be cars lined up along our road, so we’d know they were down there. We’ve got some good stories about some of those nights:)...I’ll save them for when you all are here.

Yeah, I thought she would be OK, we, of course, weren’t moving fast, and didn’t go all that far. It didn’t seem till we got home that she got sore, but it was watching her wonder around in that lost way that worried me. She just didn’t seem to know where to go. I never thought about it before of a dog getting senile...can they get alzheimers?

Well, I think I got distracted because Hope was giving me a hard time about loading up in the 2-horse. She doesn’t like that trailer, plus she had a blanket on and kept wanting to start in half sideways and hanging it on the butt-bar latch. I didn’t want to be late and I was about to lose my patience and when she finally got in, I just jumped in the Jeep and off we went.

My saddle and tack usually stays in the other trailer because it has saddle racks and all and I can lock it, and I USUALLY load up my tack before I load the horse. And with the 2-horse, I even haul the tack in the front seat, so you’d think that I’d’ve noticed that I didn’t have a saddle in there LONG before I did. But I didn’t. I guess I was having a senior moment.

Believe me, I thought about it,

So when did you realize you forgot your tack? And how did you humbly go and tell someone.

Yeah, I think they get something like it. I remember Hair talking about her cocker Zulu not knowing her in her last days. But maybe that’s not what’s going on with Nikki. Maybe she was just looking for a better way down that didn’t hurt her old bones and couldn’t decide which way to choose.

I noticed this weekend that Blade is starting to lighten up too. Loosing all the winter coat which is darker in the roans.

Yeah, they're all going through their "Spring Moult" as I call it. Their dark winter guard hairs shed off first and that leaves an almost white, woolly undercoat, and that sheds off next, leaving a short, medium gray summer coat which gradually lightens as the weather gets warmer. One thing about roans, they're never the same color on two different days.

So when did you realize you forgot your tack?...

Believe it or not, it wasn't until the minute I pulled up in the driveway of the guy's house where we were all meeting. Then it hit me like a brick and I had a few moments of flaming cuss words to myself before I went and found Shirley and told him. And of course it was way too late to go back and get it because I was at least 30 minutes from home. So somebody called Kerry and caught them at home and she brought her old one. Luckily she had just bought a new Trooper Saddle, just like Gary's.
