This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
The weather was terrific... almost too hot, upper 70s... We were complaining!
Now it’s raining... so it is still spring. Glad we didn’t wait to go :~)
Just an FYI, that you may already know. I didn't till the past year. But I was told by my vet, and learned from Martha Josey, and Clinton Anderson, that backing a horse is a good way to strengthen backs. MJ, and CA, both said a horse should be able to back the length of an arena several times (maybe not in a row) in a work out. Of course you can't expect them to do that right off the bat, but build up to it.
I do understand the dilemma you are in about the buting...it would be a hard call, that would drive me nutty:). Yeah, I understood after my visit why you may be concerned about wind:)...Having the trees a little further away may have some advantages...but I'd still have to have some. They are just so awesome...and I don't mean that word like teens use it now a days...they are awesome as the word is meant to be used:) Becky
Oh, and one more thing, altho I just read your post that it is raining, so this would be out:\ Sometime I think it would help to know how he was feeling to go out 2 days in a row not buted. IMO, the second day sometimes tells the real story. If he is still sound on the second day, I’d say he was fine. Just a thought.
Becky
I think this early in the season, I wouldn’t expect him to be great two days in a row... Heck, we’re still sore from yesterday, they aren’t moving sore at all, but they may have an ache or two just from packing us around :~)
Good tip on the backing... I did not know that.
Yeah. It’s cool even down here. We are supposed to get rain too.
Last year...
Is this place:
Is this one...
Duchess47,Hair of the Dog and Becky,
Thanks for keeping him in thought. Much appreciated.
Hope everyone has good weather tomorrow.
Maureen
Good heavens!!!! Those first two pictures are amazing...thanks for posting them.
In the second set it’s interesting that even tho some of them were left standing they lost alot of branches...
They really don’t handle wind well do they.
On the backing, I don’t do it so much in an arena necessarily but I do stop and do a lot on the trail.
LOL..you’re right this early in your season two days in a row may not be a fair evaluation:)
Just got back from the grocery store. The kids will all be here tomorrow for Easter dinner. I will spend the day straightening the house and prepare food.
Becky
Heh... no, they don't. The ones out in the open like that and at the edges of the cuts took the worst beating... it's "united we stand divided we fall" The ones in the thicker woods survived it ~better~. That's probably a big part of why ours in the yard made it... the wind was coming from behind and they didn't get the full force of the wind. The houses that were hit were in developments where they've taken out most of the trees and left just a few tall ones by themselves.
I'll try some backing here and there... can't hurt.
Have a good cleaning and prep day... will the kids be hunting for eggses too?
We just got back from truck stop breakfast.... so much for getting anything too active done today :~) I want a nap.
No, I don’t do the egg dying/hunting thing, unless they bring their eggs from home, and mom’s and dad’s do the hiding.
I got the grandkids chocolate bunnies, and sent them cards thru the week, and the big kids Cadbury cream eggs. That’s plenty.
LOL...sometimes I wonder how good a grandmother I am:)...I did all that stuff with my kids and loved it...but it’s just not in me to do it now. IMO, that part is the parents responsibility, and I don’t want to cheat them out of it:) and I don’t think kids need 2 egg/basket hunts. They’ve got enough stuff already.
We’ll just have dinner and a nice visit time. I’m hoping the afternoon warms up and I can get everyone up to go outside and piddle around in the yard, Maybe throw a baseball around. Otherwise we’ll sit here staring at the TV and telling the kids to “don’t touch”, “be quiet” “sit down” etc. etc. etc.:)
Becky
Good weather does make kid visiting a lot easier on everyone, doesn’t it?
Yes it does.
Tonight is suppose to be the coldest night of this cold spell. I think I’ve lost the morning glory seedlings. They are still standing but the leaves are all shriveled. I’m not sure they will come back. Tomorrow I’m taking all the plastic covers off and I’m miracle grow everything. That’s not that drastic of a loss. I planted them from seed and can replant easily. They come in in warm weather is just a few days.
Once we get thru tonight, it’s suppose to warm up...crossing fingers.
Becky
Did I mention Tucker started walking this week:)...I’ll get a picture tomorrow.
Becky
Chilly here and raining. Wish it would stop. I need to mow:’)
I went to my DILs babyshower today. I ate way too much Mexican food. I had to come home and take a nap too.
I’m not cooking tomorrow. I would just get mad. We will probably go to Furrs.
LOL...cooking makes you mad?
Why?
Becky
