This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Very fun! Baby got to go! We did that just a little with Cadence loose... when she got about 6 months she started getting a little too independent and had to be on the line... then she was weaned and we didn’t take her any more, but it sure is terrific experience :~)
I just love the “ear” pics ... I used to put yours up on my desktop and dream of one day being on top of my own horse again! so I HAD to take the camera today and get my own “ear” pics! hehehehehe
Yeah, this is miles of open, uninhabited land .. so it’s fun to let her go. She is pretty independent, but she still doesn’t want mamma out of her sight!
It’s terrific that you have that space... you and Becky are both lucky... there’s no place to ride out of the yard here except down a busy road. Even our trails, we just pass too many other riders to have a loose one.
How are you liking that mare? Is she real good for you?
Oh, those are great pictures:) Things are sure green down there.
Becky
She’s wonderful ... she’s a very sweet, honest mare.
Today was only the second time I’ve ridden her.. and the first time she’s had a saddle on in almost 2 years.
No lunging or anything .. I just got on her and rode. She snorts and blows sometimes, and I did have to get off her once today to get her past some “booger” (early on in the ride), but for the most part, she is very tractable.
She and I hit it off immediately .. she is VERY standoffish with my husband, and the barn owner who feeds in the mornings .. But she loves all over me .. so I’m happy about that!
This whole deal was sure a blessing .. and we’re enjoying our friendship with regalcharm(gene) also!
I really like this second picture. What kind of plant is that off to the left? Kind of fan like? Pretty cool looking.
Your mare has nice ears:)
Becky
That’s a palmetto .. funny thing about that, Charm had never seen one before either, and there is one in their paddock .. she FREAKED at them at first ..
The second day I had her, we hand walked her and the filly down this very trail and she blew and snorted at every palmetto ...
I guess they look like big hands or something .. and when the wind is blowing ... the MOVE ... horror of horrors .. hehe
How cool. I’ve read about palmetto in books before but didn’t know what they were:) So they just grow wild there?
That is so neat, like Hairs ferns...I don’t think we have anything around here unusual...:(
Well, we do have prickly pears...how common are those? When we first moved out here to this land it was the first time I’d seen it....it’s not pretty stuff tho. Just a cactus.
Becky
Well, it’s no fun to ride in the chill....our temps are suppose to drop back into the 50’s at the end of the week:( That’s going to feel like winter, after the 70-80 days we’ve been having.
Harley is really shedding. I tried to curry till it was all out on his back..I’ve had it build up under the pad and I’ve wondered if that would be uncomfortable, but there was no way to get it all...it was just coming out and coming out. The ground was white under him when I stopped. After I got back and hosed him off I saw more coming out with the water. LOL...I came in and was surfing some while I waited on him to dry, and when I got up and left the desk it was covered in white hairs:)..
Becky
Oh, and I meant to add to that last post...I’ve been out mowing this evening. First time this year:). I like to mow. I even got the weed eater stuff done. Tomorrow I have to get some more line for it, then I start on the pasture.
Becky
Prickly pear is further north and west of us .. in the hill country .. and prickly pear tea is just ... GOOD!
And, yes, palmetto just grow wild .. they aren’t as thick as they are in florida, though.
I love to mow too... I’m waiting for this seeded area to grow so I can mow it :~)
Tea???? Never heard of that.
When ever I see a prickly pear I think of the movie Ole Yeller, the mother making a prickly pear root poultice to put on the kids cuts from the hogs:)
Well your palmettos are a beautiful as Hairs ferns.
Becky
That’s so weird to me .. I grew up in Fla and they are just the ugliest dad-gummed things to me! LOL
Ever heard of “swamp cabbage” .. that is the heart out of the palmetto!
I'm not surprised about supplements either. It seems just about everyone over uses them when only rarely are they necessary. Thanks for all the information.
What great pictures and it’s sooo green there :) Cool that the filly can go along and I’m really glad that the mare is working out so well. (I have to admit, Arabs are my second favorites, I don’t think I’ve ever met one I didn’t think was smart and willing)
