The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I've got some pictures at home, I'm in town now.

While at the feed store today, the owner was telling me about that seminar that I was invited to. I think we are going to go. A speaker on marketing, and one on nutrition, (it's hosted by Purina), some entertainment, and a free $42.00 a plate dinner and cocktails. Now that I know that there will be people there I know, I'm more ready to go.

Hi folks, I just stopped by with some new horse-related gadgetry.

If you carry some tools with you when trail riding, you're always on the lookout for ways to simplify and lighten the load. One way is with the Victorinox "Swiss army" equestrian knife. Sort-of-a-hoof pick, an awl for emergency tack repairs, a blade, and a corkscrew for wine bottles that don't have screw-off caps.

Case Cutlery has come out with their version, based on the common American "trapper" pattern, which goes back over 120 years. This is their 6254HP (hoof pick):

When opened, the hoof pick looks more like a real hoof pick.

The knife comes in different handle materials, including bone and rosewood. It's made first and foremost as a collector's item, and a working knife second. That means it costs about twice what the Victorinox does. It may be too nice to keep in your saddle bag, but if you want a quality knife for your pocket, this one is it.

Is it just me, or have you noticed the appalling spelling

I have noticed it too and it is frustrating. I see more and more people spelling lose, like loose. On every board.

Morning. I'm pooped. I''ve been up since around 5 off and on. We had a beautiful lightening storm come thru. Then I had to go to WW. I know I said I quit but that evening I was at Jason's Deli and I wasn't buying green stuff. I felt someone pat me on my shoulder. It was my old instructor and the rest is hx. After that Sarah and I went to Shoney's. I could have slid under the table when she told the two ladies next to me to not each too much. Then we went to the dollar store. I took her home and hurried to the stables. It came a down pour though and we called after about 15 minutes in. Sarah Lee was doing ok but it was getting squirrelly around there. Did some tail care and finally back home.

The rain held off with only a few sprinkles. It was cloudy, but in the 60's. The sale was packed with people and there were about a 150 horses and ponies. Prices were all over the place. If the horse was well broke, quiet and a half decent looking, they brought pretty good prices.

A 6 yo paint son, of a 2 million dollar cutting sire went up to $16,500, but the man no sales him. He wanted $24,000! Good looking, 14.2 and broke to death.

A lot of $350 to $900, yearling, green broke ones. Many horses "no sale" in the $2000 to $3000 price range. One super nice dun 4 yo mare went for $6700. She was a reiner. If they could spin or were team penning prospects, they did well in price.

Estrogen, I looked for you, but the place was so crowded, I probably wouldn't have found you. We ate at Mary Yoder's and didn't get to the sale until 1 pm.

Good morning....

Quiet around here... We had a rude awakening this morning, horses in the yard. The bad news is we have practically invisible old field fence up all over the yard to keep the dogs out of the new grass we seeded. They got tangled in it at some point, it was all discombobulated. Who knows how long they were out there before we woke up, but they were pretty freaked out when we did... they wanted to be saved. No one was hurt though, we don't think. Can't tell who got tangled in it, no marks on any of them.

They got out through that little side gate to the back forty... we didn't have it latched or something.

This is the rusty old field fence we had up in the front yard around the new grass. In poor light, it's invisible. Cyn got caught in it here, best I can tell from the footprints...

Bay pulled it down at another point... I think pony saw all that and just sailed over it.

Now that I've had coffee and woke up, the part that's kinda funny.... ecurbh wakes me up and says "we have a horse emergency". "wha...?" I say blearily... "There's a horse in the yard" he says. "Ours, or someone elses?" I ask. So we stand out on the front walk for a few moments, and we see nothing. No horses, anywhere. It's not all the way light out, so we can't tell yet that the temp fence is all messed up. So he starts wondering if he just dreamed it. There was no sound.

Then we we see the pony peek her head around the corner of the house. OK - it's pony... I bark orders while I go find shoes. "Go grab some grain". I find shoes and walk around the corner and find all three horses, standing huddled behind the house, afraid to go anywhere for fear of running into this nasty invisible wire again. I led Bay out by grabbing his mane... he wanted to be saved. Led them all out and looked them over... I don't see any cuts.

Just checking in here for a minute while checking the weather. Looks like we missed the rain. :-( But on the bright side, I think I'm going to go for a ride.

I used to LOVE to play with box turtles when I was a kid. Even now I can't resist picking them up whenever I find one, and if I see one in the road, I'll stop if I can and help him to the other side. I hate to see one get run over.

But here's a tip for the next time you find one and he won't open up. Just set him on the ground and just gently slide him forward, like you were playing with a toy car. I don't know why it works but it usually does. Maybe they see the motion, because they almost always have their front shell cracked open just a little bit so they can see if the "predator" has gone, and they think that if they're moving they better get to moving their legs. Another thing I've had success with is to put him in your open palm, facing forward, and walk with him. I think the same principle applies, they see motion and open up and start trying to walk. I hope if works for you and JP coz turtles are a lot of fun. But always make sure you put him back where you found him when you're finished playing with him because turtles have a "home range" where they know where the food and water is and you want him to be able to find those things when he goes on about his business. Have fun and I'll talk to you tomorrow.

Glad to hear that nobody got out or got hurt! Emergency fence work is a pain in the butt though. Don't work too hard!

Well, this fence is just to keep the dogs off the new grass, Just stand it back up and it's fixed. They got out through an open gate, so there's no damage done.

Incidental to this little drama, we did get our new fence charger in the mail yesterday... hooking that up will be today's project.

Oh and we got another $25 gift certificate at Country Supply.... they're using our pic of hubby and Cyn on their home page. http://www.horse.com/

Yikes! I am glad no one was seriously hurt in that fence. Big fence project for you guys today. The one section by the barn here, needs repaired. They keep leaning to get the new grass and are pushing it down.

Yay! Bruce is a star.

Neither one of them is showing their best side to the photographer!

Glad the fence emergency was largely a non-emergency. Just showing once again that your horses have sense (or that Bay has sense, and the others follow his lead).
