The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

About thinning:)

I have sooooooooooo many iris, and have given so many away...lordy, and they are all that dark purple or light purple. Years ago I found some growing wild on the creek bank and brought them home. about 10 bulbs total...Now I have millions:). Anymore I dig they up and throw them out back on the ground, some have actually grown out there. I don't even 'plant" them any more.

Yeah, ecchinacia is a cone flower and all the ones I've ever seen have been purple, with kind of a reddish center. I've never seen the white. It's supposed to be an immune system booster, but I don't know how you're supposed to prepare it. I've seen it in the health food isles in pill form and I think my sister-in-law has it in tincture form. I'll bet you could make a tea out of it, but I don't know which part you'd use, the flowers or the leaves. I'm not much of an herbalist.

Well, I kinda hate to hear that. I think they missed their mark by outlawing slaughter. What they should have done is to outlaw the inhumane way they transport them. A quick death would be much better than that, in my opinion. I think there's going to be a lot of horses left to starve or be turned out to fend for themselves now because of this.

I agree with you on what should be regulated.

I don't think is going to slow down the killer market at all...one it just stops slaughter for "human consumption" and two, they can still be hauled across borders to be slaughtered.

IMO, this makes the industry worse rather then better.

Wow. I was scanning and saw the purple. You could have a yellow brick road. Very pretty.

Don't ever assume I know what I'm doing (lol)
When we stop, do I go in and take off the trailer tie , which is shorter, and put a regular cross tie thingie on?
Do I just untie him yet keep the divider up? I need specific directions as I've never gone this far where I had to stop a few times.
Any help appreciated

Are you going to Bradshaws Saturday? I might go just to see what tack they have and what they are getting for the horses.

EXACTLY! They've got to haul them farther in those awful cattle trailers. But I do think it's going to slow down the killer market. It already has. Horse prices have really hit rock bottom around here. My cousin was talking about going to the sale the other day and seeing really nice grade yearlings going for $50. And if the drought doesn't get any better and hay is as scarce and expensive this year as it was last, you'll be having to lock your gates, not to keep people from stealing your horses but to keep them from dropping unwanted ones on you.

If you're hauling him in a stock type trailer, I'd just unhook him and put some hay in there on the floor and hang a water bucket up on the wall and let him move about in there as he will. Then when you get ready to move on you can hook him back up and remove the water. Another thing you probably want to do is to bed the trailer with 6 or 8 inches of shavings. It'll reduce the shock and vibration on his feet and legs.

Aaacccckkkk!! This is me screaming. And who does Colleen Kollar-Kotelly think is going to take care of all of these horses? And how does Colleen Kollar-Kotelly think sending horses south of the border for slaughter is better for them? And how are horse breeders, etc. going to survive, now that the market will be filled with throw away horses? We in the United States have lost our minds.

One of the slaughter plants here in Texas is still in business. They slaughter for zoos across the country. I also read in the newspaper recently that the number of horses crossing the border into mexico has tripled. Don't think they are going over there for a visit to the riviera.

We should have kept that business here. I guarantee the conditions at the mexican slaughter houses are a whole lot worse than they are here.

Tonight, after years of legislation and litigation, America’s three horse slaughterhouses can no longer kill horses for human consumption,” states Chris Heyde, deputy legislative director for the Society for Animal Protective Legislation. “We call on Illinois-based Cavel International to work with the humane and rescue communities to find permanent safe homes for the hundreds of horses who were slated for slaughter, to give them a second chance at life.

Well, I hope Mr. Heyde has big pockets, so he and his organization can support all these horses.

Frog, I still think, it is illegal to haul horses in those double decker cattle/hog trailers.

Good horses will still demand top dollars. It's the run of the mill backyard animals that will be cheap. I will see how this effects prices at the sale on Saturday. There are usually a lot of good horses and it is spring, but a lot of lesser quality also.

Yes, we are going.

You might pick up some leg wraps for your trip, if you don't already have some.

Beautiful pictures! You will probably have to keep dividing the plants, to keep them in check.

Well I'm glad to hear it because that would be awful.
