This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
That youngster is a riot.....really loves to kick !!!!!
What will you do with your old place?
That is really weird looking...have you found out anything about what it is?
Becky
Nope - no answer yet.... thanks for the bump!
Well whatever it is I don't think it's anything to worry about from the looks of your pictures.
I didn't ride today...it's just too muddy. I went to town and watched two more episodes of Lost:)
Becky
Drive straight through. Offer water when you stop for gas.
She certainly isn't lame :~)
It's like the cuticle is just growing way too much or something.
I can't find his book on shoeing and the vet book doesn't have anything like that in it so this is a guess okay?
I think I'd ask your farrier about it first off. If it is mud, he's probably seen it before.
So he thinks it's a top layer of hoof that's peeling up, not excess cuticle growing down? It feels like rubber.
They don't have to stand in constant mud, it's dry in the stalls, and they're on grass in the pasture, they just have to traverse through a bad muddy patch in the paddock.
He just said he thinks you need to have it checked - especially since she's the only one that has it.
Off to see if I can find anything about this, back in a few.
Thank you!
If I don't get any good answer from the farriers over at the horse forum.... I'll call Mark.
So far I've found nothing except mention of autoimmune disease but the pictures do not match what you have shown.

Slinatsi, I have a pony mare whose feet peeled just like you describe. A more wholesome diet and keeping the edges rolled caused the peeling walls to grow right out, and we've had no trouble with it since.I've attached a picture of the peeling from last year, to compare to the gelding in question, if you'd like. (Jeepers, how on earth do you get the pictures small enough to upload and big enough to still actually see??)
http://www.horseadvice.com/horse/messages/3/122407.html Sounds like they were talking about something like you are talking about.
That sounds just like what Hair is describing, wish they had pictures with it.
Thanks guys, for looking for me... I guess it's a puzzle I'm gonna have to figure out tomorrow.... if Mark'll call me back.
We're keeping the cabin and selling our house here (I hope) the market is crummy which is one of the reasons we are moving. With the market the way it is, me being a mortgage loan officer has been dismal the past two yrs. I plan on working another few yrs. and want to live somewhere where I can make some money. So.Carolina is where I want to spend winters anyhow ,so when I do retire it will be perfect..winter in the south and summer at our cabin.
