The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Have you decided how you are going to haul him?

We think that we will drive about 3 hrs. at a time and then stop for 15-20 minutes ...then continue at that pace. I would love to find a horse motel along I-77 from Cleveland to Columbia SC.,....any one know of anyone?

Great pictures and great video. I saw it from work today but didn't get a chance to post. I cringe everytime I see those "stairs".

LOL - me too. When I'm riding I'm on the look out for gold coins, old bottles, bones, etc. Can't afford to go fast, I'd miss it.

I have to stop and get down to check things out. Is it any wonder Bob hates to ride with me? :)

I posted a link to you some time back, but maybe you didn't see it. HORSE MOTELS

Do you think horses really have some sort of "horse language" between them?

Could be! Ours call to each other all the time, when you take one away from the "herd". That is why I suggested not getting a companion horse for Waylon. So, did you ride him or not? Mine was let out in the pasture, because I wanted to do some spring cleaning.

Oh Hair - mouse fuzz has to be gross. I once blew up a car engine with some critter's nest. It was my 32nd birthday and I did a 9 hour shift at work and then went across the street to my favorite watering hole to spend quite a few hours with family and friends.

Car was a Lincoln Continental (back then I was a magnet for bad drivers and we figured I'd be safe in a big used boat like that) and had all electronic gadgets and gauges. Sucker didn't tell me it was getting hotter it just started dinging as she blew. My uncle helped me limp it off the road.

Other uncle replaced engine and almost blew the second one. He ended up finding some animal nest near some air intake that didn't have to be disturbed when removing the old motor. Car had been parked by a field all day and they think some critter decided to make itself at home in there...to the tune of $2,500.

Good morning:)

EEWWWWWWWW....Seattle. I'm going into Bixby today:)

The rain that has been forecast for the last week everyday, finally got here. Looks like it's going to rain all day. No riding today. Also means the mud will be even worse tomorrow...But we really needed it.

...I just couldn't ride like that. I like to gawk around too much!

Well, I must confess, we don't ride that fast all the time either, but it is fun to cut loose and boogie on down the road like that when it's hot and you're trying to get from point A to point B. Mostly when we're going down the trails through the woods we're just walking. Now granted, it's a faster walk than most Quarter Horses move out at. It's probably about as fast as a normal person would move if they were walking as fast as they could at a flat-foot walk.

Good luck. I'm doing interactive orientation the next three days. I took a part time job, doing chart reviews for a company... Never done anything like this by internet. Supposed to be 50 of us on.

Did Bob go down the steps to the water, also?

Yeah, Bob's an old hand at those steps. All of my bunch gets used to those pretty early on because that's one of the trails that we ride fairly often. I've never really had a problem with any of them refusing to go down them, even the first time. We just get another horse to go down first and the newbie just follows right along.

I like to do that too. That's why y'all see so many pictures of Shirley and me climbing on rocks or poking our heads in cracks in rock walls. It's fun to imagine who might have been there before.

Wow, that's a lot of people you went with. I always like going out in a group. I think that it's more fun that way, but the largest group I've ever been out with is 3. When you're gaiting, it looks very comfortable.

Yeah, that's the nicest thing about it. Don't get me wrong, I kinda like the speed too, but the absence of soreness at the end of the day (and the next day) is the main thing. If you'll notice, there's a lot of older men in that group. I'm probably the youngest. And quite a few of them are former QH riders. At some point, you just reach a point where your bones just won't take the jaring anymore, so you either quit or get a different kinda horse. I just lucked into starting off with the easy kind to begin with.

Large groups can have a whole different set of challenges then a small group, just as going by yourself is different:)

I don't mind large groups as long as I know whose in the group, and/or who is in charge of leading the group.

Some of the people I know, i would not go out with..LOL..even in a small group, unless I know there is a leader who can keep them under control:).
