The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Well then one more:)...for some reason a lot of them didn't load, and I'm not up to waiting tonight, but I just noticed this one did:) We were walking to the creek here...we had to chase Nikki back home because she likes to swim.

I like JP's little tackle box:). He was so important with his own box and tackle.

The tacklebox is very good :~)

How's Nikki been? Seems like she must be doing OK if she wanted to come along :~)

I've been thinking. I do have several cues that I have taught her without thinking about it. She doesn't like people messing with her legs. If you go to lift her foot she will bear down and you have to lean in and pull hair. However, if you touch a leg and say "foot up" she lifts it right for you. When you say "foot down" she puts it down. She will move away if you put a blanket on her and will shake it off while you get the saddle. However, if you show her each item and let her smell she stands still. Am I spoiling her? Should she do stuff on cue book like?

Well she hasn't been down any since that episode, and she's tried 2 times to come with me on rides. I forget to lock her up. So who knows. She doesn't seem to hurt, altho it looks to me she is stiff some times. Just getting older.

I set her up a nice place in the barn with the cushion off my swing:\ It's long enough that I can put one end in a dog crate and one end hanging out. That way if it's chilly she can go in the crate and build up some body heat, or if it's warm she can lay out:) and still be on a soft cushion. Most times she's under the RV tho, LOL.

Tomorrow is my day with Sarah. We go to Walgreen's with coupons and eat breakfast out. She's excited because I told her this time she had to push the basket, pay for breakfast and leave a tip. She asked if she could drive too.

No, you aren't spoiling her. Seems you've got a routine and it works. She does what you ask, the way you ask - that's all that counts. She's not a hack horse, nor are you giving people lessons on her, so use whatever works. As long as others don't confuse her, you're fine.

And I need to add...a lot of people (like Bob) get upset about stuff like that but they don't realize they also have their own habits that their horse learns and reacts to :) they just usually aren't verbal. Plus, they really get nervous (insert Twilight Zone music) if it appears that your horse understands what you're saying beyond come and whoa. :)

LOL. That's true. I don't know how many times my husband has said "Janis...she's a horse" when I have explained how we do things. He humors us though and will stuff the blanket in her face and say "here horse, SMELL". Is the saddle to your liking"? and tease me with stuff like that.

:) Been there, done that. At least your hubby humors you instead of having a fit.

I'm hoping to be riding out of here by noon...slow start today.

We have to go to a wedding this afternoon....sigh....trying to figure out what to wear. Jeans would be OK at this wedding, but all my jeans are rather ratty...I don't have a pair of dress jeans...so that leaves dressing up...I don't really mind dressing...except for the shoes:)...the one dress I have I really need to wear heels, but lordy, it's been so long, I don't know how long I could keep them on:)

It's Jenny's Sister in Law that is getting married...Her invitation is very very western type,

Wanted!
The posse's out and the search has begun for guests to celebrate, etc...

The grooms men are wearing boots and hats...so jeans would be OK..but once in a while I don't mind dressing. especially since I can now wear some of my older smaller size clothes now:), it's just it's been sooooo long since I wore heels. I put them on and walked around the house a bit...I don't know...I use to could wear those things all day...even just sitting with them on now could be a chore:)

Well, you could wear them to look good... then after a couple hours, at the reception, change into comfy shoes. No one will notice or think less of it by then. :~)

My ride was great! I haven't got over the amazement yet that Harley is going to be OK now:)...and the amazement at how well the flexing exercise works to help keep his head in good position for stops and turns. I don't care where he keeps his head when we are just going, it's when I ask for a stop mainly or a turn, that I don't want him sticking his nose out and gaping his mouth open...that has all stop. The stops are so much smoother, and I didn't really work on the stops, I've just been doing that exercise.

Well, anyway, time to go get ready, probably won't be back till tomorrow sometime.

That's cool! You'll have to demonstrate it for us when we come to visit!

Have fun at the wedding!
