The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

We didn't use it today but he's been using a martindale (ms?) to lower her head for a smoother ride. We mostly worked on whoas:,) and starting her with verbal cues. They say that they think when I touch her sides, no matter how lightly that she acts like she is supposed to move out fast. What else? Whoaing without getting in her mouth and me reading her and trusting her to drop her head more. That'a about it. I was elated though when I was told that she looked just as pretty with me trotting , and that her neck was arched just like when I watched with him riding. I may not throw the towel in after all!

It's real possible that she was trained with spurs and expects that if she doesn't move with the touch, a spur is next. Lady had been trained with some real subtle cues and I finally had to learn not to use some cues I normally would because of the training she'd had. Just thinking about touching her with my left foot would up her gait, from a walk to a trot to a canter. I learned to give her signals with my calves only unless I wanted her to speed up. I was accustomed to using my whole leg and couldn't do that with her.

Funny how I hadn't noticed that. Just a click or "walk" and she moves but if I bump her she's off. Turning is no problem though. I use leg cues before rein and she's fine but standing or going forward, she may be getting confused?

Sometimes it's a real puzzle figuring out a horse's previous training when you get one that's already broke to ride. My thoughts are if you use a cue twice, and get the same results twice, someone has trained the horse to respond to that cue. If it's a response you don't want, try a different cue.

When I was in my " sale SL" mood, I was looking on the net and found a place where you order a horse and are there for the birth and you and the horse are trained together. You train on a horse you know about, until it is old enough to ride per your experience. No time limit. I was thinking yeah, if I was 10, that would work. At my age though 8-10 years is a long time to wait for your ride:')

Indeed it is. You'll be able to figure out SL and what she's been trained when you start paying attention to the response you get. So what if bumping her is the "right" way, if you get the wrong response every time, instead of confusing her and you, find a cue that she and you understand and use that. She's your horse so whatever the two of you come up with is fine. If clicking or speaking to her works, then that's the one to use. Lady would always slow down if I said "easy" - no idea why that worked better than pulling on the reins so to speak but it did. Easy always worked when she wanted to shy also, or when I wanted her to pick her way through rocks.

Easy works for her too. I also use stand. When she moves with mounting, if I say whoa it's like "I didn't go anywhere." Stand" is don't move. It was working ok til Wed. Today we discussed "stand" again but she did better.

No, Tucker is too little, and I was very glad to have Kristy go:) Blake was on spring break this week so he was staying with Jenny and Travis.

Duchess: Did you notice those tall green boots have eyes, AND were on the wrong feet:)...why do kids always put there shoes on the wrong feet...they do it so often I've thought maybe we have it wrong, and they know what feels better:)

See - you two understand each other and since no one else rides her, that's all that counts.

I asked Bob not to ride Lady, because she and I understood each other very well and did great but she didn't like cowboys. (I think she didn't like men in general) Anyway, since she was my horse only, it didn't matter how we got where we were going, just that we got there, along with everyone else.
