This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Well, sometimes they get bored stiff and sour at home, going around in the same circle all the time. I wish I could watch you and SL and know for sure, but something tells me that with a boost of confidence and experience from YOU, the kind you'll only get from miles traveled.... SLs problems wouldn't be so bad. Does your trainer have good bomb proof trail horses you can use? I'd love to see your trainer on SL, and you on some trusty, finding out how SL would do if you took her out. Okie too.
That's exactly why I never have used the arena here much. I've had very few horses that would work in it well. You I can make them work good enough, but it seems to me their attention is always wondering off more to what are the other horses doing, has anyone put anything in my feed bucket, etc...
I still think SL main problem is she was never ever properly broke. She was gotten on, rode by some cowboy till she learned to follow, then stuck in a dude string. JMO tho.
I agree with Hair, your trainer is not giving you good lessons. She should never have sent you to lunge the horse when she was moving around for you to get on, or for jumping around. SL got exactly what she wanted, you off. Then she got to go throw a fit in the pen. I may be reading it wrong too, but it sounds like you never really got her to even lunge properly???...so she learned throw a fit long enough and everyone gives up and I get left alone. Any trainer should have known that and continued the lesson till you at least got the horse to walk around the arena nicely.

That is why I sold Eve, I just did not have the energy to keep up with her moods and I wanted a realiable horse. Working 40 + hours a week and a 45 miles each way commute, blah, blah, blah I did not have time to work her as heavily as she needed and I was nto real sure that would have helped much if it was indeed hormonal. Blade is a great horse, I can ride every weekend, every other weekend or once a month and he is pretty good. It was challenging when he was younger but at almost 5 he has matured so much in the last year. Temperament is so important.
I think it works both ways. I bought a pretty mare that had been ridden in an arena, rode beautifully in it, never a problem. Take her out on the trail and she just plain turned mean. After the 3rd time she dumped me and 3 broken ribs and a cracked tail bone we sold her as a brood mare.
Well is what I meant was the horses don't work well in the arena I have here at home...if I take them to a different place they seem to be more attentive.
Becky
I have no clue:)
Becky
She might be retarded... I'm not ruling that out either :~)
It's hard to advise from here. Especially because I don't have a lot of confidence in the quality of the advice you can get there, either.
You're just going to have to fly us all down there to see for ourselves... we'll conference on it. :~)
We ordered a new one.
I saw you ride, I've told you you were OK.
IMO, you got a horse that is not broke, and you didn't have the experience to handle her when you first got her and now she has some issues, that maybe you still don't have the experience to handle.
And:) you're still free lunging:)...LOL...you know that's a pet peeve with me, I fuss at everyone for that. But really, If you know there is a possibility that she will buck when free lunging, I wouldn't give her the chance. Every time she bucks she gets better at it. When she bucks on the line, jerk her little face off, and keep jerking till she stops or you have her reeled in.
< /soapbox > :)
Becky
I agree.
Becky
Hey. I went and got the darn thing and stopped her. That should count for something:')
Can you not ride Okie at all?
Becky
I can, but no. He offered but he belongs to Josh now . They are doing so well together. They went riding 4 hours today. I didn't ask where. She only has 50 acres so no telling where he was. I don't want to mix up what he's communicating to Okie.
Ok, I can understand that.
But that is great that Josh is riding him. I'm so glad to hear you are getting some use for him.
Becky
I would try replacing the fuses just for kicks and see what happens.
That works :) and if she moves while you are trying to mount, say NO! WHOA!
Well, most of our horses hate arena or ring work - it's boring. They make their dislike obvious but really enjoy out on the trail. It's worth a try. Maybe she is part app :)
Funny thing is I thought we had got past this. Friday I'm going to be on before she comes out. I may need to remind her what thumbs to her ribs feel like.
