I would not get him out of the trailer at all...maybe about every 3-4 hours stop for offer him a drink, give him some hay if you can't give it too him thru out the trip, and let him just stand in the parked trailer.

JMO tho.

LOL....sorry, you're getting contradictory advise now. I'll bow out and advise you do what Hair says:)

But two questions, do you ever have any trouble loading him in a trailer...and what type of trailer do you have?

Well, I think if the horse loads easy, let him out to rest and move around along the way. As much as estrogen travels, I bet she doesn't have loading problems.

Certainly, if it takes hours and a team of hands to get him in, then your only option is to travel straight through.

It was gone until I picked it up to describe it to Blake:') 200 calories wasn't bad though and I left them at work for the night.

So, would you untie yours while resting in the trailer?

Heh... at least this way, she could go either way and still be following advice :~)

Naw... I'd let them out to walk around and graze a little every few hours. If I had a chance to drive it once first without them, I'd scope out potential places to stop along the way, otherwise, I'd do the best I could with searches of the internet for stables, fairgrounds, trailheads, horse camps, even just rural stretches of road we happen upon where we can find a spot to rest awhile.

It would depend on they type of trailer she has if I would untie him or not...

Straight load, NO, slant, yes as long as the divider can be opened, stock trailer, yes.

And yes, if you can find a nice quiet place to unload that would be OK, I just would do it at a rest stop off the highway, or around the highway...All the traffic, and big trucks could spook one.

JMO, tho:)

I think you mean't ~wouldn't~ do it around the highway, right?

Being able to scope it out so you know where places are and how to get in and out would be really nice, if that's possible.

And know your horse, if you get where you planned to rest and it's a lot busier than you were expecting, then make a different decision.

LOL - I'm one of those people who delete every email from someone I don't know and any forwarded from someone I do know. I've got hit with viruses twice, I'm hoping to skip a third time.

Well, I've learned that there are some safety/health issues that don't have much budge room but a lot of "horsin" depends on you, your horse, and what's going on. I can see leaving them in at times but getting them out if the environment and their attitude is right too. I was just wondering in places where you wouldn't get them out if people untie, when you decide it's best to leave them in.

Wait 'til you get there before you decide on shoes, he probably won't need them there either. You can pull him 12 hours straight - just check and see if he wants water when you stop for gas. DO NOT UNLOAD HIM. Don't get another horse just to keep him company (but if you must, get an older mare, well broke, etc. etc. - mares generally don't take much off geldings without putting them in their place). Good luck and hoping for pictures.

You didn't like the horse hotel idea? That way they could both rest. Pulling a trailer wears you out.:')

Yep it does. But I've learned over the years that if I can do the trip to wherever with one load and one unload it's easiest and safest. No matter how good the horse, the more they are loaded and unloaded, the more chance for problems.

That's kind of how I feel about it...If the horse is only use to 3 hours, and they put him in for 5-6, he may not be anxious to get back in...

I just didn't know how far to push it...the farthest I've hauled is 8 hours. The horses seemed fine when we got there.

I just don't like advising on these types of things:)

Twelve hours is the longest I've hauled but one of the horse haulers that delivered a mare to So Cal for us had the horse in for closer to 24 hours. She was fine when she got there. They hauled in a slant load with floor to ceiling dividers though and a window that dropped down for the horses to be fed and watered. They also hauled with the horses untied.

A lot would depend on the experience of everyone involved, I guess. I've got good loaders, I wouldn't hesitate at all about unloading them for some breaks, but I can see why some might. But I know I wouldn't be able to drive that long a stretch in one shot, so I'd be looking for a place to spend the night.
