The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Well, this is just my opinion, but I think fruit is way over rated as far as nutritional value vs. carbs/cal. Nuts are good tho. 28 almonds and thats a serving size, and that is really alot of almonds) is only 160 cals. I count out a serving of almonds a day, and much on them thru out the day...5-6 at a time.

We use fly masks in summer, they do keep the face flies off, but not off the muzzle. Ours don't take them off very often, but then, our flies don't bite really.

Is she shedding right now? She might be itchy from that as much as anything else.

Good morning. That pink SWAT is really good by the way. I've never used a fly mask with only one hole for the ears so I don't know how that would work. The smallest fly masks that we have bought were arab (which are small).

If you have an Avon distributor friend, some Skin So Soft rubbed all over her face and head might help.

:) yep, it's kind of a shock when they decide to jump from a standstill and you have no idea where they came up with the idea in the first place.

I love the South Beach Diet stuff. Especially the snack bars and meal bars.

They do have the calories and sugars. I got my vitamins but gained on bananas when I was going to WW! I'm giving this one more try though because I have to teach nutrition. My class was very understanding. I came right out and just told them, "hey, I know I'm not the best role model here but I am trying and this is why we need to eat healthier choices...... When I start the next class in July, I want to be lighter.

Ours only have one hole for the ears, is this what you mean? We've never had any that had two.

I think our pony's was pony/foal size or something.

I do the same. I got a can of the WalMart brand smoked almonds. They are pretty good. I also love my flavored coffee. I get the International Foods French Vanilla sugar free and have a big cup of that in the morning, that sort of satisfies the sweet tooth a little also.

My old mare used to get rain rot every spring when she started shedding. I bathe her with medicated shampoo and that helped a lot.

Thanks for all the input .. that is the EXACT flymask I was looking at last nite ..

she IS shedding .. and the mosquitos are already out .. could be a combo of both.

I will paint her face PINK tonite.. The one thing I like about the pink is that you can SEE it, so you know when to reapply .. LOL

I'll probably have to get flymasks for both of them. Bugs are pretty bad down here in the summer :-(

I just feel so bad for her little baby self ..

I'm going to pic up some nuts and a couple of the southpark bars and try them but I have to be careful. I love almonds, esp the dipped in choc ones:')

Do you ever go through there with a metal detector?...Think of all the travelers over the centuries who have used those rocks for shelter.

Nah, it's a National Forest so the only people who're supposed to be doing that kinda thing are archaeologists. But I've heard of people who have done some illegal digging and found all kinds of arrow heads, beads, pots and so on. I think the main occupants of these shelters would have been hunting parties of Creek and Cherokee indians, back when they used to live in these parts. There are several of their ceremonial sites in the Forest and they've gotten quite vocal here lately about people leaving them alone, and I can understand that. But if they had their way, nobody but them would be allowed to come in the whole Forest, and that's not right either.

LOL...not southpark, South Beach:)

Just one tip. There are two kinds of bars. Meal replacements, and they are over in the pharmacy dept where they sell the diet foods. Those bars are 300+ cal.

The snack bars are over in the grocery dept. on the aisle where they sell the cookies, and granola bars. Those are the ones that are for snacking. Just an FYI

...Maybe we should take her up for walks in the woods with us, without the other horses...

Boy I'd love to be a fly on the wall the first time THAT happens! All I can say is that you'd better give her some Quiet Pony Powder the first several times you do it or she's likely to beat you back home. It's not that I don't think you can do it, it's just that I think that she'll be absolutely bug-eyed at everything that moves or makes a noise. That's what happens to my trail-broke riding horses when I try to take them out by themselves, so I can only imagine what her reaction would be, having not been off your place to speak of for most of her life. But you gotta start somewhere. It'll be an interesting training exercise anyways.

Well, this is probably one more of those ideas we talk about and never actually do ;~)

If she got scared, she could go either way... she might pull out of our hands, or she might do the pony equivalent to leaping into our arms. Around here, if she gets scared, she comes right into my space, like she wants me to protect her. ;~)

Yeah I caught that. Wonder what those boys would name their products? Ok. Thanks.I don't want to buy a bunch because I have the mixes and also I find that I really don't like the taste of SB, WW or any other diet product snacks until I'm low on sugar a few days and then they taste good. Kind of like going from coke to diet coke I guess.

Well that's good. She may do fine then. It would definately make her happier to get to go along when y'all go out riding.

Now I was going to ignore the "southpark" reference, but I did get a good laugh out of it. The Slim Fast Snack bars are a little less expensive and have fewer calories and fewer carbs than the South Beach ones. Look for the "net carbs". There are also the Atkins bars and snacks. You just need something to satisfy the craving. Amazinly enough the almonds do a pretty good job. One more thing, make sure you drink plenty of fluids. I like the Crystal Light, you ca get the single serving ones in the Walmart brand too. They have several flavors now in the Walmart brand.
