This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!

Well, I've never seen a full blood catahoula, so I'm assuming he looks more like them. I know the people he came from and they owned his mother and father, so he is what I've been told...

He's got some brown (what's the word for it?) mottling on his chest and front legs.

He's a pretty neat dog, lots of personality:)

I sympathize with your mud... we'll be dealing with the same thing in a few weeks here when we can get up on trail.
Well, I went for a little ride today too... bareback... want to start Bay carrying weight slowly, a little bit at a time, easy walking around the pasture. It's been since October.
~sigh~ I am absolutely disappointed/disgusted/depressed with myself for not losing weight this winter. I said I was making it a goal, I just didn't follow through and do anything about it. I am not doing my old horse any favors, or myself. I had ecurbh take some pictures, but I am disgusted with how I look in the closeups, so I'll just post this one.
I know I shouldn't be surprised, I knew I hadn't lost weight, but I hadn't seen any pictures of me since last summer, and I don't ~feel~ as fat as I am, so I live in a state of denial until I give someone a camera. I got so depressed looking at the pics I pouted on the couch for an hour after looking at them.
One more, only because the pony was having such a fit about me riding and she looks good. She raced around and put on quite a display.
Bay did good though... didn't feel like he was going to collapse. I'll do this 30 minutes or so every day I can till we can get out and do the first short trail rides.
People pretty much know how far they can jump. I just wondered if a horse does too, like over ditches and stuff.
The palomino was nice, I like his strip on his face...these people raise really really nice horses.

I'm sorry you're depressed. Believe me I know how you feel....I wondered if anyone noticed last year I wasn't posting pictures of myself....it's a constant struggle, and somedays I just don't know if I can go on. Last week I lost only 1 stinking pound...

Hang in there, we've all been there.

I'm so used to Bay, who's pretty upright, and I feel like I'm going downhill on most quarter horses and even Cyn, who carries her head down around level. I got on her the first time when we were looking to buy her, and it felt like she had no head.
I wouldn't think they would know till they try.

I've had a few horses that I've taken down to the creek. They didn't want to get in, and during the battle to get them in, you could tell they were thinking of trying to jump it...there was no way they could have, but they thought about it. So did they not do it because I wasn't letting them, or because they figured they couldn't make it...who knows.

Becky
I just wish I could decide to do something about it and stick with it for more than a day.
The pony does look like she is having fun:) What was Cyn doing?

I don't like being in pictures because of my size. I get very down about my weight too. I can make lots of things happen but my ....sigh.
Mack and I didn't really get serious about losing weight till physically we were constantly hurting, sick. It was a do or die thing. Mack has lost 75 lbs over the last 2 years. It's helped me that he was working on it too.

And to be honest neither of us exercise all that much. I walk a few times a week, and Mack doesn't do anything.

I get far too bored and lazy to keep up with exercise for the sake of exercise. I did it the summer I was excited about ecurbh coming and lost about 40 pounds. I lost it pretty easily, I just need a fun motivator like new love... I'm far too complacent now, bless ecurbh's heart for loving me anyhow :~)
I know how you feel! We don't have full length mirrors or a scale in the house, so I can fool myself most of the time.

~sigh~
Well, the scales are my main motivator. I get on them every morning.

Becky
Maybe I should get one and put it in the kitchen and stand on it whenever I am considering making myself a sandwich :~)
I have to weigh every day too. Just 1 or 2 days off and I can gain 5 pounds. You know about my full length mirror don't you?
I have toyed with the idea of getting serious about losing weight for years but never really did anything about it -- 3 weeks ago I went to the OB/GYN, she's a new lady, my old guy retired. She looked over all my records and said, "Well, you've been gaining 10 pounds a decade since you were married. That's got to stop. And reverse course. Join Weight Watchers."
So I did (I always do what my doctor tells me to do.) Showed up at a meeting the next morning. Amazingly enough, it seems to work pretty well. 3 weeks on the program, I've lost 10 pounds, and I eat pretty much what I want - just have to watch the portions and count the points. It's not too bad, and the meetings are very encouraging. I was so sick last week with a sinus infection I was SURE I had gained, because I just couldn't count points or even cook sensibly, just ate what I felt like eating and what was on hand so I didn't have to get out of bed to shop. I STILL lost 1 pound and was happy to lose just that . . .
 . . . now if I can just keep this up . . .
Almost anything else I ride I feel like there's nothing in front of me at all. Very odd!
I just know I'll never go to a meeting.

What I need is a good physical project that goes on a couple months. I like doing physical work, but there needs to be a point to it, not just walking in circles around the pasture.

I think I'll get off and walk on trail rides, especially at first, it would do me and the horse some good.
