This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!

Wow Duchess! Great pictures!
Oh wonderful pictures:) Great story about the white stallion too. So do you think they really captured one, or is it urban legend??? Could they be related, father son type thing?

Would these be considered Mustangs? It's so hard to imagine "wild" horses running free.

There was a herd around here when we first moved out here, but you know, some of them were geldings:)....I don't think they were truly wild:)

So do you just take off across country on the bike, or are there trails/roads? Looks like the land Gus crossed in search of Laurie in Lonesome Dove:)

Nice pics. I'm glad he's still free. There is just something special about white horses.
Terrific pictures! Would love to see them in person some time! From what I can tell, they seem to be at good weight and healthy, don't you think? :~)
He's all white, although he was really quite a distance away. We could see him well in the binoculars but the camera can't zoom that far. We were on the side of a mountain, there was a canyon and then the mountain he was on.
Thanks. I really enjoyed myself this afternoon. Been a long time since we've been able to get out like that. And it was in the 70's here :), of course a little cooler than that up in the hills but even the flannel got too hot.
They are mustangs although not many left around here. The mountain range we went into (well, two ranges) gives them a lot of room to hide and occassional water like the springs. The stud looked good and the three yearlings (?), two of the mares were okay but one mare is really thin - it looks like she's heavily in foal with a yearling still nursing.
And, yep, it's some pretty desolate country out there. We have a Sazuki Samari (the one I camo'd) and it will go just about anywhere. Until you get way in to the hills, the roads are okay, just rocky but after awhile you are hitting areas washed out. A hundred years ago though, there was a lot of mining back in there so there are roads or wagon roads all over. And in the desert, it doesn't grow over much.
Well for years I thought it was just a legend :) I figured Bob had seen a paint, not an honest to goodness white horse. Then when they caught the one last summer I was really amazed. It was so cool seeing him :)
All looked good, especially coming out of the winter we had except one mare. She's heavily pregnant with a yearling nursing her. Her hip bones are really sticking out.
We may have talked about this before but can't feed be dropped for them?
Hey, that's outstanding. I'm glad to hear that she's willing to work with you :)
Well that's a sticky question. Most of us are opposed to feeding them. First of all, it wouldn't be consistant. Mostly though, then they begin to look for food from people, they start coming down out of the hills and get rounded up or hit by cars or heaven knows what.
I can see that but I meant dropped from planes in the hills. We do it with vaccinations for wild life evey so often here.
There's a good bit of browse in the hills, especially now with so many horses gone. But, no they don't drop from planes. It's against the law here to feed them so the county nor the state would do anything like that.
Ok
Me too. I guess that I didn't make enough noise! :-)
Oh, OK, not a bike:)...I was thinking when you said the suzuki you were talking about a bike...

Well that is really cool that you get to see them like that.

Thanks again for the pictures they are great.

Becky
Duchess, outstanding pictures, thanks for sharing.
Sarah, you gave Alison a big smile...thanks.
Hair, yes it was a year end awards banquet. Ride for points and all that. Another one in two weeks.
I caught something, feel terrible and going back to bed.
