This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Ouch! I trust you gave the offender a well-deserved whack on whatever part of his/her anatomy that you could reach, (after you caught your breath of course)! Horse bites hurt no matter WHERE they getcha. I had one get me on the arse one time as I was bent over cleaning out his feet and it left a blue mark for weeks. I hope you're ok!
P.S. I hope you're not female!
No I had to settle for moving that brat horse around in the pen. I understand that the whack should be immediate and
aimed below the jaw. Didn't have my dressage bat with me..
Nothing wrong with moving them around the pen either, as long as they think you're gonna kill them if you catch them, and wish you had after you've run the daylights out of them.
If I don't have anything else available, and the offense is severe enough, I usually try to get in a well placed kick before they get out of range. It usually just ends up hurting my foot, but it helps my pride anyways. ;o)
Hey Frog, how did your ride go this weekend...any bucking?
Becky
Welcome to the thread.
Sorry about the horse bite, they do hurt.

Looking for high percentaged, (100%), Foundation Quarter Horse Stallion for my private use; (I have a few nice mares). Quality, color, and size. Want a stallion that's safe and easy to handle, well mannered, respectful. Broke to ride western, (perhaps reining), discipline. Doesn't have to be a big show winner, just a conformationally correct stallion prospect. Will have to rely on Seller's integrity if too many States away from Virginia, as will have to ship-in. No hurry; not a Christmas present; gift to myself, (can purchase anytime before Spring breeding season). Reasonably priced. Your honesty is appreciated. Please e-mail me privately at: ...Deleted name, email and telephone #. Let me know if you want me to send it to you.
It finally snowed last night, after all those warm temps we had been having.
I don't think there are many 100% foundations on the east coast. I read a few Foundation Quarter Horse Journals this summer and the concentration appears to be west of the Mississippi.
They are fantastic horses though.
This weather is crazy. We are going to have a very nice day here today, better then yesterday even, and I rode with just a long sleeve shirt and my ears covered.
I took a few pictures but nothing exciting.
Celia on the trail ahead of me.
The short piece of road I come out on occasionally, since it's a dead end road, there is very little traffic and plenty of room at the sides anyway.
Harley had one little moment where he got pissed off, not sure why, but I suspect he is not liking the new bit. If you remember I switched bits because I was having trouble with him, constantly speeding up as we trotted and loped. He wouldn't hit a stride and stay there. With the new bit he's feeling the correction more and not liking it:)...We were trotting and he was wanting to lope and I wasn't letting him, and he finally just threw his head up and went sidewise, Celia said he was wringing his tail. But he stopped quick and went on, and did better...but I could tell he wasn't happy.
Today we are going again and I'm really going to work on that, he may come in tired today, which it doesn't seem like he has the two times we've rode now.
Becky
Morning all, Becky.... did you ride yesterday?
I hate to sound like a complainer, but we have another strong wind storm coming today... Rain, high winds during the day, then snow tonight.
Ah - I guess I just didn't wait long enough for pictures! I won't grumble about your good weather.
Good luck with whatever put a kink in Harley!
I'm so sorry about your weather....I wouldn't like the wind there either, heck, I don't like it here:). Stay in touch.
The forecast here is a cold front moving in Thurs night, and being really nasty, cold, sleet, snow till Sat. Hard for me to justify complaining about it, with all the nice days we have had. I'm hoping to ride every day that I can, I think that will take the kink out of Harley. I think his problem is mainly the bit, but his not having had to really work for so long could be a contributor too.
Anyway, I'v motivated now to keep going, and I'm actually making my goal of being a more productive person. Been cleaning, and I even painted an accent wall last night in my living room, put the second coat on this morning. I've always wanted to try one. We've been talking the last few years of a complete remodel...so this is more a trial run to try different things to see what I like, it may not stay.
Becky
Good luck being productive :~)
We'll stay in touch... The last wind warning didn't amount to anything here, but we'll see. I have a meeting in town today, so there's that.
OOOO, that's worse then a wind storm.
Becky
Thanks, I'm ok. I need to learn to be the boss a little more. A person on the John Lyons board suggested being
more possessive around the feed to underline my dominant
position in the herd, and only let them feed after they
assume a respectful stance.
Heh... yes, it is :~D It's just adding insult to injury, lol
Nope, not even a hump in the back. I rode Hope and she just did great. It was a gorgeous day and warm enough that I made the whole ride in a short sleeved shirt. How often does THAT happen in January?! We rode close to 20 miles and kept it to a steady slow gait the whole time and she didn't give me a minute's trouble, aside from kicking one of the other guy's dog. He has this big ol' pretty Weimeraner that he usually brings and he ran right up behind her, right at the start of the ride and she nailed him pretty good. I didn't hear him coming or I could have probably prevented it. It didn't appear to do any real damage to the dog, but he yelped real loud and I'm sure it hurt like the dickens. I appologized profusely but he said not to worry about it, that the dog needs to learn that he can't just run up under any horse, and I guess that's true. I kept an eye on him the rest of the ride and we didn't have any more trouble. Hope's gonna make somebody a really nice little horse.
Good for you and Hope!
I think dogs are on their own, while I don't want to hurt them, I don't like it when people have dogs with them, at least on our trails. It's narrow and they always run up out of nowhere to greet any new horse they see, and the owner really has no control over it.
Good for Hope:), on both being good and nailing the dog:)....LOL....I think that's really how dogs learn, unfortunately some never do. Grizzly doesn't really ever run up behind, but he does come out of nowhere sometimes, and it startles the horses. If I ride on a consistent basis, Harley seems to get use to it, but he jumped a few times yesterday when Grizzly came charging out of the woods. He jumped more then Celia's youngster did...he's going to be a great horse.
Wow, and 20 miles....that was a good ride. We're hoping to do that today, at least close to that. A lot depends on Celias horse. He's young, just getting started under saddle consistently, (she's been on and off hiim for several years), and he's barefoot, so he will be our gauge. After the way Harley acted yesterday, I'm not going to be too concerned if he seems tired:)
