The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I don't think you are mean. I just didn't know the entire story. My advise still stands though. Tell her no, or right now. I work very hard with people that want to learn stuff but I have no patience for attitudes or drama queens.

Kitty update, and it's hopeful!

We took the kittens in for their shots, all was well, they are thriving... Then went and put them in the truck and brought Cartman in. After initial shock about how it looks, we talked about whether or not it hurts, decided to try some drops that ~might~ decrease the pressures in the eye, and discussed a procedure the vet had just read about that involves injecting the eye with some kind of solution that will kill the eye chemically, as an alternative to removal. Would just shrivel it up, she said, and would not be all that expensive... $50 plus anesthesia. Not bad. She's never done it, but would be willing to try it.

We decided that at this point we would try the drops and see if it seemed to do any good at all... since he does get some use out of his 'good' eye still, he's better off with it than without it. But if they get grotesquely huge, or injured or painful, I think it sounds worthwile to try.

She talked about glaucoma being a painful condition and his eyes are certainly enlarged, but they don't seem to be hurting terribly now, he has a content look on his face when he's not all p*ssed off, and he purred in the vets office.

She brought a vet student in to look at it. I always ~love~ to have the animal with the condition they want to show to everyone in the office. ;~\

Anyway... that's the update. Cartman lives.

They aged him at 18+ based on his estimated age when he first showed up as an adult in 1992. I think he's doin' pretty good.

Oh, we walk about a mile and a half down to the polo field, then it's about half a mile in on a dirt road with grass either side to the polo fields. The creek is on the opposite side of the polo fields from the entrance road, and each field is 300 x 150 yards.

If you can imagine a huge rectangle with the Chattahoochee River running down one side, a tributary creek down one short end, and the entrance road coming in by the barns at the opposite corner from where the creek meets the river.

By the time Miss Ruby had shaken herself a couple of times and walked ALL the way back across both polo fields and up to the street, she was perfectly dry.

Check out these plans to build your own cavaletti.

They're great. I built six of them - you can stack them 2 or 3 high or put them in a line. They work great! And the materials aren't expensive at all. Just be sure to paint them.

I think I'm going to build some kind of standards with pins or cups. Just a couple... I think my pony can easily jump higher than my last-year's jump. She needs prettier jumps... painted even :~)

For now anyway...

And he was much more subdued in the vet office than I thought he'd be. He yowled when I was walking in, but he settled in once he got in there and wasn't all stressed out.

Good News, indeed for the Catman!
Here's hoping the drops work out for him and his family.

You should see her! She's as big as Shelley, only lankier and leggier. Growin' like a weed, and no manners at all!

She actually is the star of our obedience class, only because all the other humans are first-time dog owners. She does what I ask . . . ever so briefly. Now we're working on "stay" which is not Miss Wiggle Butt's forte. But she's managing, with the assistance of a pinch collar and copious bribes.

That's good to hear. Drops shouldn't be too difficult for him to handle. It might work :) Glad the kitties are doing well too.
