The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Quick question...Isn't one of the things that fescue does to a pregnant mare is make the bag the foal is in real thick, and hard for the baby to get out of??

My daughter's FIL's pregnant mare lost her foal yesterday. He thinks the bag was thick, but he doesn't know why. The foal was either still born, or just couldn't get out of it. The mare was still trying to get it out when he found them.

I thought I remembered somewhere hearing/reading that fescue would do that, not sure tho.

Oh, the standing in the trough thing really cheezes me off too. Most of mine do that too. I really hate it when I go to the trouble to scrub the trough and fill it full of nice clean water and they muddy it all up with their nasty feet. I finally put my trough up on cinder blocks and that helped. They will still turn it over if it gets too low, but I'll take any little bit of improvement I can get.

Yep, that's exactly what it does. Most people who have fescue on their pastures that isn't the endophyte-free variety will put their mares up at least 2 months before they foal. That's long enough to get the fungus out of their system and prevent the thickening of the placenta. I didn't have to worry about that because my mares are nearly in a dry lot. There's nothing out there for them but weeds. I feed them bermuda hay all year long.

I don't even know if I could get in the saddle right now. I'm worn out. Whipped. Momma is back and my door is locked

Jenny is going to talk to him tonight, because they have another pregnant mare due in about a month. If it's fescue, they need to do something about her. I would have thought her FIL knew about it, but maybe not.

Thank you :)

It's a meningiomas which is supposed to be 99% benign, and about 1/2 inch size right now. I'm still waiting for her to call me and let me know when it is supposed to be scheduled.

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that. Yes, that is part of the problem with fescue. I believe pregnant mares need to come off fescue if they are on it, at least three months prior to foaling.

Good Morning.

Yesterday, I took Bodie's blanket off and let him go outside. Before I could do that, I had to dig all the snow out from the front barn door and the gate to the pasture. So glad to see it is starting to melt. Mid 40's today.

You all have a great day---Spring is coming!

Spring is coming!

Yes it is. We've got mid 60's here today and it's supposed to make the 70's by the weekend. Of course there'll be thunder storms coming with that warmth, but I guess you've gotta take the bad with the good.

I gotta show y'all my new toy. I found a great deal on a huge wheelbarrow at Sam's over the weekend and went back and bought it yesterday afternoon. It was raining then so I didn't want to mess with unloading it last night so I did it this morning when I stopped to feed on my way to work. And here she is...

It'll hold 6 cf or 550lbs and I LOVE it. It was only $58 too and you can't beat that with a stick for a 2-wheeler. Who'd've thought that a wheelbarrow could generate so much excitement! ;o)

"Who'd've thought that a wheelbarrow could generate so much excitement!"

I was bragging on a new cookie sheet to my neighbor once. After we got finished oooing and ahhhhing over it, we took one look at each other and burst out laughing, realizing what we were doing.

I already had one 2-wheel wheelbarrow, but I needed another one for the other barn. My original one came from Sears and it's pretty nice, but it has wooden handles and a steel bed and it's already rusting pretty good, even though it's always inside and I never leave anything in it. I guess the manure and urine just eat it up. This one has a thick black plastic bed and galvanized metal handles so I think it'll hold up better. Plus I like the roll bars on the front. It should make emptying it much easier but I haven't had a chance to try it out yet.
