The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Well now I have to defend him. He is a good boy. He was standing ground tied till I waved my hand at him to pick his head up...I think I started him, he jumped away, and then realized he was loose.

But he was smart enough to know that as I walked down the road towards him he could stop and graze till I got so close to him, then he'd trot off a distance and stop and graze some more:). They're too smart for their own good.

Hey, good pics. It IS really hard to get good square ones when you're working by yourself. Now you know why all of mine are taken with them tied to a trailer. Not the best background I know, but it's the best I can do. Plus I'm making all kinds of strange noises and throwing things out in front of them to get them to look that way and prick up their ears. I think you'd almost have to train them to "stack up" to get good enough pictures for real conformational analysis.

No road trip for us to pick out a trailer. He is getting very busy, so I do not want to wait any longer to order. They are booked until the end of April now. I will just have to take a chance by looking at pictures. He will be getting quite a few used trailers in trade, if you are interested. Besides, after my accountant did my taxes, I better watch every penny. You would think they get enough, but NO, they want more!

Sometimes it isn't worth the effort for a good deal, is it? I have been looking for a used one with a living quarter. There is a place about an hour from here that sales them new. I just hate going into debt.

Thanks:). I doubt really you can tell a whole lot from pictures. Even if they are good ones, just a general idea. It's just fun analizing.

I think my riding schedule for the week is going to work out great. I'm keeping Tucker today, and I figured I was loosing a day a should have been riding. But you know what, the wind is soooooo bad, but is suppose to be better the rest of the week, I'm glad now it worked out his way. I usually keep him on Wed. So looks like I'll get to ride 3 days this week.

Well I'm glad you're finally going to get to get some riding time in. I know you were kinda worrying about being ready for your races this spring. The weather has just NOT cooperated this year!

I haven't been able to get any riding in here lately either. Seems like every weekend that it doesn't rain, it's like 14* in the mornings and that's just too darned cold! It was like that this past weekend. I couldn't have ridden anyways because I had to go to a funeral on Saturday for one of my mother's sisters, but we alsmost froze to death at the graveside service so I was kinda glad that I wasn't out trying to ride! The wind was just awful, but at least it wasn't raining too. It was slightly warmer yesterday, but still really windy. Today is even warmer, but STILL windy, so it still feels pretty cold. It's supposed to get progressively warmer all week, but it's also going to rain most all week too, and next weekend it's supposed to rain both days. I just can't win!

I ordered the Renegade, which is a little bigger living quarters, than the Cheyenne. No AC, frig, stove, or microwave because I would rather have the cupboard space. I don't really need all that. He is putting a 19' awning on for me instead of the AC. I am also having it clear coated and a mattress put in. Bottom line= $24,000. If I bought the same thing in aluminum, it would have probably been closer to $40,000!

Hey, you only live once! Would you use a living quarters trailer? The reason I wanted one instead of a regular trailer, is because there really isn't a lot of places real close to ride around here. Most are an hour or better drive, for the good riding.

I know you've got your reasons, but I'd at least have to have the A/C and the Fridge if I was going to go to the expense of getting living quarters at all. I wouldn't care anything about the stovetop, coz you can get little propane camp stoves with a burner on them, and you can always buy a cheap little microwave and set it on the counter anytime. But at the very minimum I'd have to have the A/C. I just can't sleep when it's hot.

I have to agree with Frog. My husband and I camp alot and if it were not for the AC we would have been miserable in the Alabama heat and humidity. We have just a little weekender package in ours and we hardly ever use the microwave, but almost always use the AC.

Hey there girl! Long time no see! Looks like we're doomed to another rainy weekend again this weekend. I guess it's just not meant for us to make it to Walls of Jericho before the leaves get on the trees.

You people would need the A/C then. There are only few weeks in the summer, where we use the air in the house. There are only a few horseman's camps (in Southern Ohio) with electric hook-ups, so I would not be able to use it anyways.

Oh, well then I understand. No sense paying for something you can't use. But at the campgrounds around here with no hookups, people bring small gas generators to run their A/C. Some camps have rules against running generators after 10pm, but at least by then it's somewhat cooler and as long as the trailer is already cool, you can kinda make it until morning. Horse trailers aren't insulated quite as well as houses and they just turn into big ovens on wheels down here. I don't know how our Southern ancestors survived without it. I guess we've kinda gotten soft. ;o)

Yeah, I have been quite busy lately and just now trying to get back in the loop. I am in deep depression that we have not been able to ride! I hate winter! cold, rain, wind, yuck. Our horses will need to be shod again by the time we can go to Walls Of Jericho!
