This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Well, I did it. I have an appointment March 6 with a different farrier. He called me back this morning, and we talked a bit. He said pulling shoes is usually caused from a balance problem, which I knew. He said his clinches on the nails would hold for with what I do, He said unless the horse has a confirmational problem he could stop these problems....He said alot:) LOL, but I feel I've reached a point where I need to try something different, as bad as I hate this.

I totally understand. I had to change tuffy's shoer to the racetrack shoer and it was very hard for me to do. The old shoer still trims all of my other horses, though.

We actually have another vet in this area who is a jerk, that I wouldn't use for anything.
And I know of one farrier that has no people skills, but is supposedly a good farrier...I was actually considering him, but was hesitating because I've heard so much about him. I don't do well with people like that:) It amazes me that both of these vets and this one farrier are over run with business tho....I don't get why anyone would pay some one to treat them like crap....

It's tough! I hope he works out better. I know it's sometimes hard to give up the devil you know for the devil you don't know!
Just for curiosity, take some good pics the day before he comes, and after... to see if there's any significant difference.
I wouldn't feel so bad if I had other horses for Chris to work on, but honestly I don't think Chris would do that...Rocky has been running barefoot now for close to a year and has only needed trimming twice. With all the rocks around here he stays pretty short on his own.

But wait... March 6? Does that mean you're having the old shoer come back in between and put the old shoes back on? Or just leave him?
If the people I call for help can't treat me with dignity and respect then I can't spend my money with them. Being nice and respectful to people is such a basic business practice, if they can't get a simple thing like that right then they may not be such a good shoer or vet, either.
Have his feet toughened up barefoot in the paddock? Would he be able to go out on the trails now you think or would he still be ouchy? Just curious about whether they really "toughen up" or whether they just are what they are.
Our trainer has a couple of farriers that she uses -- one to keep the other honest, I guess. Actually, since she has almost 30 horses, it's too much work for one guy - he can't always come out when she needs him, etc. She tries to put the horses on a schedule, but sometimes the horses have other ideas!
Good idea. Help me to remember that. I'd like to take some of him now too, to see if you can see how his feet grow different. Might try to do that today.
So you didn't say:), do you think you would change at this point? I'm still trying to decide if I've given Chris a fair try. It's just with the time of year that is coming, and I really want to do this I need this horse to be able to go. I'm afraid if it doesn't happen this year, I'll be done, it's so hard to stay motivated, without having problems. I don't feel now I can have him ready for the ride in March, and one of the ones I wanted to go to in April is out due to a scheduling conflict I have. I have tickets to a Clinton Anderson Clinic that same weekend. So of the six I wanted to do I'm down to 4, unless a miracle happens and the weather cooperates and I can get a lot of riding in the rest of this month and March. The ride in March is towards the end of the month.

You got that right. I run off rude people. Sometimes it bites me though. When we were building our house my husband sent a plumber out for a bid. My money was building the house but he didn't want to negotiate with me. He called me a "little woman" and I sent him packing. My husband and BIL were not happy but sent another one out. I liked this one. He cost more and the darn toilet "walks" but I liked him:')
I don't think I'm going to change now for the reasons I've got... Bay's feeling really good right now, from what I can tell. If it ain't broke don't fix it, right? He's used to his feet Mark's shape, and he's moving just fine.
I'm intrigued though that there are now NB farriers in town, if something happens where I need to change, I'd do that.

Good heavens no, he is still so gimpy on rocks, he is such a wuss.
The last time I had him trimmed, he just need to leveled up (now I wonder if he was:\, he got so ouchy, remember, I thought he was foundering. Chris did not really trim anything off, just filled some spots.
You can tell when he goes out of the pasture how careful he is in the rocky areas.
He'd have to be shod to ride him.

Oh boy, I won't even deal with plumbers, builders, car repairs guys, etc., because they are typically so condescending to women.
I don't think I'd change if I were you.
I was wondering tho, if you think it IS time for ME to change?

I wouldn't mind the NB shoes, but even the vet told me Harley's feet are good, and he should do fine in the rim shoes. She feels the NB shoes are for a horse with a problem. They won't hurt a horse like Harley, but he doesn't NEED them, so why pay the added expense...

Oh - Yes - I do. He's not been good, and the shoes not staying on is just the latest thing.
This last time with 2 coming off in such a short space of time....that's just not right. Something is just not balanced, and I feel like I've given him several chances to fix it, the sore shoulder, and being off on the angle just did it for me.
