The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

That foal made it but one she had a year or 2 earlier was killed in an accident. Someone left a gate open, it got out and was hit by a car. Those people really had a run of bad luck.

Zebra and horses playing football? No, I didn't see it. I'll look it up on youtube.

I'm so sorry to hear about tuffy. Did you try soaking his foot?

Good morning!

My trainer placed FIRST in the Southern region in the Centennial Hunter Trials . . . first in turnout and first in performance. She gets to go to Virginia for the Nationals . . . how 'bout that! (maybe some of that expertise will rub off on me!)

There's one is scotland where you can do a group ride on Clydesdales. When I can, I'm going to start saving my pennies for that.

Right after it happened I was soaking his foot in a diluted betadine mixture, to keep the hole clean and infection free. I did that once a day for 3 days. After soaking I put a pad on and taped it up good to make sure it stayed clean. I'm going to start the epsom salt soaks today, there's gotta be more abscess in there as lame as he is.

What's your new job???

She's a good teacher, too. Not all good performers can communicate what they know.

She's also good both with beginners (kids AND grownups) and advanced riders. Her advanced teenage girls can hold their own at any competition . . . and some of us old ladies don't do so badly either . . . ;-)

Have you tried packing the hole with that black ichthammol ointment? I hear that's supposed to be a drawing agent. The last time Truly got an abcess, we tried to drain it like that but it ended up coming out the coronet anyways. I kept the black stuff on both places for quite a while.

She does sound like a great teacher to be able to relate to her students across age and skill levels like that. Those are few and far between and worth their weight in gold.

I haven't tried that. Where do you get the ointment? Drug store or tack store? How long did it take Truly's abscess to break out at the coronet?

Good morning! I've still got a space heater running under my little rental house until the new heating duct can be fabricated and things are put back together so my pipes don't freeze again. I decided I'd make a terrible pioneer.

Horses seemed to have weathered the worst of mother nature in fine shape. They've eaten a ton of hay and pooped even more! We've got to haul hay Saturday, which should be fun in 22 degrees. At least we found some to be had.

Tuffy - good luck with the abscess. We had one once that wouldn't seem to go away. Turned out there was also a large blood blister in the foot that had to be drained. We had no idea it was there but he wouldn't get sound again. Of course, calling the vet for work like that is always the last thing you want to do cause they can go digging crazy.
