The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Duchess, I’m sure you’re glad you got her back, and I’m glad you got her when you did, she was only there a few months, right? She was headed downhill fast.

I’m sure she’ll come around in your care, and I’m glad it wasn’t a bad scene with the guy.

Good Morning.

AMM, looks like you and your dogs had a great time. Ruby is getting pretty. She will grow out of the long, lanky stage and be a very beautiful dog.

Hair, sorry you didn't get to ride, but you guys accomplished a lot. Looks like he is a keeper.

Well, he’s a pain in the rear is what he is (Barkley), but that’s par for the course around here ;~)

Amazing how fast she went down, for just being there a few months. She was giving all she had, to that baby. What did the other horses on her property look like?

All dogs, are pain in the rears..lol But, you got to love 'em.

Kids went to a horse show today and it looks like storms are coming. I can't decide, if I want to go or not.

I’m going to a horse show to watch, a couple of riders from my barn are showing. There are usually purty fresian-esque horses there, I’ll be sure to take pictures.

Did you go to the gaming night last night too??

We crashed, muscling that fencing was hard work. I don't know what time we went to bed, but I'd already been asleep on the couch for awhile when we did. Maybe 8-9 oclock :~)

We're going to ride today!

Just took pictures of our deer... I was hurrying to get out there, I wanted to get a pictures of her going over the fence...

But she went under it instead... ;~)

Heh... I decided not to follow her into the back forty... first, because I wanted to give her some peace, second, because I wasn't dressed and hadn't even had any coffee yet :~)

You gonna keep him?

We haven't ~said~ so yet, really.... And when he bellers, I cringe... but he's here, and I know how these things usually turn out for me.

AAM - great Action Labrador shots! :~)

I love that howl. I’ve only had two dogs that I was really attached to...Cindy and a beagle named Cooter (I didn’t name him:’) I found him at a pet store. He was in a cage he had grown too big for. All he would do was cry. The owner told me I could have him for cost. Those days I couldn’t really afford it but he was so miserable. I opened the cage and he jumped into my arms. The rest was history:’)

Yeah, Jenny and I went. I started the pictures loading awhile ago and went and mowed while I waited:)

There was a nice crowd, mostly kids.

Lead line class. (I thought this picture was interesting, because it seems like you can see right thru the wire fence and still see the kids head. On the camera screen, this didn't look like a very good picture because of the fence, I almost didn't load it, but it was the best of the lead liners so I did. Then I noticed how it almost seems like you cans see thru the fencing, why would that be:))

Then just a few more random pictures.

I think my high school physics teacher, or photography teacher, could answer that, but I'm not sure I can without looking it up... I think the answer has to do with light refracting and bending around things.

I don't think she's sick, just sad but we are keeping a very close eye on her. Bob said she's doing good this morning and I'm going out later to brush her and try and untangle her mane a bit.

Yesterday was the first time Sam had a halter on - he's got Sonny's mind, he's very laid back and easy to get along with once he figured out what people were asking of him.

We didn't realize the lack of knowledge on the man's part, although the lease originally was to the partnership. He essentially still has her leased until she foals, except he can't take her anywhere (and he's okay with that). He's paying a minimum board for her feed, we are covering everything else, shots, worming, vet, farrier because we WILL have that done whether he sees the importance or not. And hopefully, over the next year, teach him something about horses.

Good luck with the cover letters and have lots of fun at the show. Take lots of pictures :)

I think she will be okay - she’s not been down too far or too long so she’ll recover just fine. We should have checked on her more often, we last saw her two months ago and she was okay then. Apparently our trainer saw her about a month ago and she was too thin so it’s just been six weeks or so. Too long but fixable.

I can see my chickens at risk here as training progresses :) Do the dogs learn what birds to pick up and what birds to leave alone?

I guess I was thinking that the dogs only retrieve birds that have been shot - ie, dead birds. It took a good bit of time and hard work to teach our queenslands that chickens were off limits. Will the labs have to be trained on that also? They probably will - shoot.

Her horses are all fat and sassy. Apparently Friday was getting run off food by the other mares (duh - move her to another paddock) but on the other hand, Sam was way bigger than her foals and was running them out of the creep feeder. It really looks like she was pissed at the man, pissed at Sam, and taking it out on Friday. I guess if Sam hadn’t been taking over the creep feeder she’d be in even worse shape. Not much of a human being or a horseman, sad to say.

Not dressed and no coffee :) - You are definately a focused photographer. That was a great fence you all put up though and it should keep Homer and Barkley in.
