The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Seedy toe would be in the toe area anyhow, so that is out and I am sure he would have recognized that condition.

I had a mare that would get seedy toe, it did cause an abcess one time and we had to soak her foot. I remember Queen getting thrush and it stunk to high heavens.

There’s no real stink to this, it’s like the black around the nail holes, just worse... it wasn’t gunky looking till he put the medicine on it... more like the hoofwall was just black.

Oh wow, sorry about getting lost and they rough terrain. The tops of my thighs still hurt, from going down hill. Some people we passed on the trail, asked how the pony kept up with the big horses. That pony and Alison did awesome!

The park is Beaver Creek State Park, located in the far Eastern part of the State. I have heard of Lebonon, but not sure where that is. There are quite a few good places to ride in Ohio. I will check it out for you. I live close to Mosquito State Park.

Lebanon is north of Cincinatti about 45 miles.

I should have known where it was, because I used to go to the Grand America Trap Shoot and that is close Dayton. Lebanon is between Dayon and Cincy. There is a Beavercreek over in that area also. Way across the State from me. Your best bet would be Ceasar Creek State Park. They have hookups at the campground and over 30 miles of trails. I have never been there, but it is one of the best in the State.

Here is a LINK

Here are some pictures from our ride Saturday. The place is called Circle E Guest Ranch. It is quite a set up, I believe they have organized rides there too.

Those are really good pictures! I hate it that it rained on ya though. That muddy hill looks like a real challenge too, and where it wasn't muddy it looks like it was rocky. I'll have to make sure I get to go the next time. But I sure am glad I didn't try to go this time coz the water pump on the Jeep was definately on it's last legs. It had started making a suspicious grinding noise on Thursday, so I didn't even drive it on Friday when I was off. I took the old Buick over to bottow the truck and trailer that I used to haul the hay with. It was a Dodge 2500 and it handled the load really well. I had 9 1000# rolls on the trailer and it pulled it just as well as it did when it was empty. I may have to look into those when I go to buy a new truck, especially since they've just announced that they are including a limited lifetime warranty on their powertrains. I don't know if that includes diesels or not though. I'll have to check into it.

Here was what I was hauling...

I intended to get 27 rolls but only ended up with 18 because of a mix-up in the count in the field. Hopefully since it's started raining again I'll be able to get the rest the next time he cuts if I still think I need it.

Dang, that is quite a load! I am happy for you getting hay. You were a little worried about it being scarce.

Well, the trailer I borrowed last year would hold 14 rolls at a time, so I was a little disappointed with this one. It would’ve taken me 3 trips to get the same amount of hay that it took me just two to get last year. But hey, beggars can’t be choosers! It was my sister-in-law’s brother’s truck and trailer and I sure did appreciate him loaning it to me.

It was a beautiful place. I could not believe the stalls and the chow hall. I wish there was more shade at the campsites but other than that it was a 1st class place. Day ride fee was a little higher than I am used to paying, $25 for a couple, but I guess we got our moneys worth being on the trails for 8 hours!

$25 for a couple

That is not bad. It cost me $14 a night and no hookups! A ranger came around and I paid him. He said someone normally comes around and collects and gives you a permit. We didn't see anyone, so I wonder if he just kept my money or we could have stayed for free.

That was just day use, not camping. Their camping fees are much higher, plus stall rentals. I don't think they give you the tie out option, which is fine. I like it taht the horses can lay down in the stalls after a hard ride. Another placew we go the day ride fee is $10 but overnight camping is $45 with two stall rentals per night. That is about the norm for water and electricity here.

Wow, that’s a load:)

It’s raining here again today. They’ve been haying like crazy around here...I’ll bet a few people got caught in the middle of this. Seemed to come out of nowhere.
