Dog breeds: Slovakian Cuvac, Hungarian Kuvasz, Polish Tatra dogs, Italian Maremma. Please let me know if you know anything about these dogs.

They have very gentle and protective temper. Good for children, as good as babysitter.
At least the one I played with in my childhood.

If you check dogpile.com, you'll find lots of breed info - seriously. I've never heard of these animals before, but they look like awesome animals for the right family - lots of space, exercise, a "flock" to care for, and kind firmness.

Same family as the Great Pyrenees, same personality types. They are lovely, lovely dogs - gentle disposition, protective, herders, self-sufficent. They generally have two faults: (i) they shed year around, little tufts of white hair floating around will be part of your life; and (ii) they like to roam - they are bred to manage herds on their own and they think nothing of making a circuit of miles just to check things out. This is not a run down the street kind of dog, they run MILES when they run and they love to go out and look.
If this dog is not confined, it needs to be on a leash or you will need a motorbike to chase it down. If you live in the country and have acres of land, no problem, in city and suburbia, the dog will be the source of UFO sitings (humor). Also, most pens are insufficient as are most fences. They are incredible with children though - can be just a bit stubborn.
