I'm not particularly a fan of Gibson. I happen to have an interest in Mesoamerican and South American pre-columbian cultures though and I'm sorry, they were savages. Many great advancements that have fascinated me for many years doesn't eliminate the sacrificial practices.

Many Europeans of the so-called pre-Columbian era were savages too. Human life in those times other than your own had little value to almost any culture.

The Mayas, sad to say, were mean to each other. They regularly fought wars and sacrificed enemies.

For pete's sake they stuck thorns through their foreskins and drippled the blood for religious purposes.

In the end, a massive Bermuda High that lasted 300 years AND internecine warfare destroyed their civilization long before the arrival of any Europeans (other than the guys who came in 800 AD and passed along knowledge of the bow and arrow).
