Brazil Mourns As Anorexia Claims Another Model's Life
Drudge ^ | 11/16/06 | Andrei Khalip

The mother of a Brazilian fashion model who died from complications of anorexia has made an emotional appeal for parents to take better care of aspiring young models.

The death of Ana Carolina Reston, 21, follows growing criticism of the use of underweight models in the fashion world, an issue given new significance after the death in August of Uruguayan model Luisel Ramos of heart failure during a fashion show in Montevideo.

Reston died on Tuesday in a Sao Paulo hospital from a generalized infection caused by anorexia, an eating disorder in which sufferers obsessively deprive themselves of food in pursuit of an ultra-slim look.

Reston weighed only 88 pounds (40 kg) and was about 5 feet 8 inches tall. Doctors consider the weight normal for a 12-year-old girl about 5 feet tall.

"Take care of your children ... no money is worth the life of your child, not even the most famous (fashion) brand is worth this," her mother, Miriam, told O Globo newspaper.

She said her daughter had been trying to help her family with the money she made as a model. Miriam spoke on national television and to local media to highlight the tragedy.

She said she had pleaded with her daughter to eat more and to see a doctor. "She would reply, 'Mummy, don't mess me around,'" Miriam told O Estado de S.Paulo.

O Dia tabloid carried a picture of the dark-haired, big-eyed girl in lingerie on its front-page with the headline "Dictatorship of skinny look kills a model."

"It is real. It's just not a picture of the person in the story. "

It appears the photo was originally taken from an anorexia fetish site which no longer exists. To suggest that actual fashion models look like that is absurd. They would be laughed off the runway, just before an ambulance was called to take them to the hospital. I realize you were trying to make a point, but being dishonest isn't a very good way to do it.

It came from this site that still WORKS!

I dont know when they were taken. Back in Sept there were models that were not allow to walk the catwalk for being to thin in Spain. I cant help but think these might be related. < snip >
Five of the 68 models who showed up for appraisal failed the test, the doctors said. The models were over 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighed less than 121.25 pounds,

Whether her agency sent her to a specialist or not is moot. My point stands: this girl worked for an industry that takes the old motto "you can never be too thin" to an extreme. Girls 25+ pounds underweight are routinely encouraged to shed just a couple more so they'll be "perfect."

Both pictures are of the dead fashion models at their 'ideal' professional sizes just prior to their deaths.

I personally believe that Nicole Ritchie's skinny act is for publicity's sake. She's a bizarre looking mediocrity who has gotten tons of magazine covers simply because she won't eat.
That said, I do believe that anorexia is a real mental disorder and it must be heartbreaking to watch someone fade away by their own doing and you cannot stop them.""

Timely----This was the topic on Dr Phil today.

While I would like to part with 30 pounds, I cannot imagine what is swimming around inside their heads that drives them to this.
Also, I cannot imagine who would hire them and pay them obscene amounts of money. That photo looks like something out of a grade B horror movie. UUUGGGGHH....

120 lbs at 5'7" doesn't strike me anywhere near an anorexic weight. My wife is that tall, and weighed 105 pounds when we got married.

As a tribute to my new-found cause in supporting Anorexia awareness, tonight I will be dining on Cuban-style rotisserie half chicken with onions, garlic/citrus Mojo de Ajo sauce, white rice smothered in black beans, and a small side of deep-fried plantains. For an appetizer, I will have a Cuban wet tamale with steamed onion garnish.

LOL! Neither! Of course, that was then, this is now. Neither of us still weigh what we did at our 'playing weight' ;)
