Pretty much my feelings as well. Maintain a presence in country, but outside of the major populations areas to discourage Syria and Iran. Then let the Iraqis sort out their internal security problems.
I would also like to see the Iraqis pushed hard by the US toward developing 3 separate states under a central federal United Iraq government. One for the Kurds, one for Sunnis and one for the Shiites with Baghdad being a separate federal district. Each state can develop their own social laws respective to their cultural and religious beliefs. They can even have their own militias. There would be issues as to border placement for each state, but as long as the national wealth is federally owned and managed, the problems of who gets what in terms of national resources is unchanged and maybe even improved. It then becomes more a matter of defining states by traditional territories that are already in place. By each major group having their own constituionally defined homeland, it takes off a lot of internal pressure among the factions.
